Stephen O'Shaughnessy Obituary

YORK, Maine - Stephen Francis O'Shaughnessy Jr., 85, of York, Maine, after a decades-long battle with cancer died peacefully at the Maine Veterans' Home, Scarborough on Wednesday, July 12, 2017.

"Steve" as he was known to family and friends was born on January 15, 1932, he was the fourth of five children, to the late Stephen F. and Helen (Begey) O'Shaughnessy, Sr. Steve was raised in York and was a graduate of York HS. Following his graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served four years during the Korean War as an air traffic controller at Dow AFB, Bangor, Maine.

While in the Air Force Steve was reacquainted with a former childhood friend, Roberta "Bobbi" Carey and they were married on September 3, 1955. Steve earned his Mechanical Engineering degree from Tri-State University in 1958. Upon graduation Steve worked for several large defense-manufacturing companies before his tenure with the Department of Defense from 1963 to 1994.

Steve and Bobbie lived in Hudson, Mass., for 25 years where they raised their three boys. Steve was an active committee member with Boy Scout Troop #35 in Hudson. In 1994 Steve retired and he and Bobbi moved back to York where they built a home on the family property.

Steve was active in his church and the community of York. Steve served as a Lector for many years at St. Christopher's parish. He was an active Ultreya member after completing his Cursillo retreat. He authored a detailed history of the catholic's of York in his account of the first 100 years of The Star of the Sea Catholic Church. He was also involved with the York Historic Markers Committee where he designed many of the markers placed at sites in York by the Committee. He was also a lifelong Red Sox fan.

Steve leaves behind two sons, Martin, of St. Augustine, Fla., and Matthew of Hudson, Mass., in addition to four grandchildren: Patrick and Kelly (Buckley) of Williamsburg, Va., Micaela O'Shaughnessy and her husband Benjamin Fisher of Ashland, Mass., Robert O'Shaughnessy of Newport, R.I., and Evan O'Shaughnessy Hudson, Mass., a sister, Joan Gallagher-Jewett of Hudson, Minn., and his daughter-in-law, Jessica Feeley of Caribou, Maine as well as many nieces and nephews.

Steve was predeceased by his beloved wife Bobbi, of 52 years, his son, Stephen III, his parents and by two brothers Thomas and Francis and sister Helen Nagle.

SERVICES: Calling hours will be held from 5-7 p.m., Friday, July 21, in the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Rd., York, Maine. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 11 a.m., in St. Christopher's Church, 4 Barrell Lane, York, Maine. Burial will follow immediately in the First Parish Cemetery. Friends to join family for a gathering at St. Christopher's following burial. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Disabled American Veterans in his name to Secure.DAV.org.
