Virginia Andrews Obituary

KENNEBUNK — Virginia Hatch Andrews, 96, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008, at her home. She was the widow of Haven W. Andrews, who passed away July 1, 1996.

She was born Feb. 26, 1912, in Newton, Mass., the daughter of Ralph E. Hatch and Helen N. Hatch. A member of the class of 1929 at Newton High School, she also attended Smith and Wheelock Colleges.

As a child, Virginia visited Kennebunk on a regular basis and recently recalled taking the trolley from Wells to Kennebunk, Town House, and to York; and she remembered riding with a family member, who lived in York, in a horse and buggy to go shop in South Berwick. As a young adult, she played tennis and played golf with her father on many courses in northern New England.

She spent many summers before World War II, with her young family at "the farm" on Harrisickett Road. She mentioned with pride, just recently, canning blueberries, green beans, tomatoes and raspberry jam.

She and Haven moved to Kennebunk, from Rochester, N.H., in 1968. In retirement, she and Haven spent summers on Harrisickett Road growing and canning vegetables, raising a team of oxen, sheep, pigs, chickens, lambs, and golden retrievers. Children, grandchildren and friends were frequent visitors.

She was a member of the Brick Store Museum, Laudholm Trust, and St. David's Church. She was also a former board member of Kennebunk Public Health for which she was a long-time volunteer.

She is survived by four children, Patricia (Wm. R.) Richmond, of Glen Mills, Pa., Haven W. Andrews Jr., and Paula, of Kennebunk, Charlotte (Gerald J.) Pacelli, of Darien, Conn., and Elizabeth (Craig) MacDonald, of Kennebunk; eight grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Marguerite H. Vaughan, of Venice, Fla.; a nephew, Douglas, and his family; and a niece, Carol M. Reams, and her family.

A grandson, Haven W. Andrews III, passed away in 1995.
