Adolph Whiting Obituary

Adolph M . Whiting, M.D.

Born October 23, 1918

Died August 4, 2013

Adolph was born in Duluth, Minnesota to Norwegian immigrant parents. He attended

school on Lake Superior's north shore and graduated from Two Harbors High School in 1937. He was a graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1945. He met his wife, Jeanne, also a University of Minn. graduate and they celebrated their 70 year marriage last December.

As a U.S. Army medical officer Adolph served at the 375th Station Hospital, Kobe, Japan and was chief of medical services at the 407th Medical Dispensary in Kobe caring for military personnel and their dependents.

After Kobe he took a 3 year residency in psychiatry-neurology at the Univ. of Minn. and the VA Hospital. The family moved to Seattle in 1951, and after being the Assistant-Chief of Neuro-psychiatry at the new VA Hospital he was recalled into army service as head of the in-patient psychiatry unit at Camp Atterbury Army Hospital in Indiana.

Dr. Whiting had a private practice in Seattle for 50 years and was affiliated with several hospitals including many years as a member of the Fairfax Hosp. medical staff. He was active in many local and state organizations, and was one of the founding members of the Seattle Crisis Clinic. He taught at the Univ. of Wash. Medical School as a clinical associate professor.

His experiences in WW II and the Korean War inspired interest in post-traumatic stress disorder and it's complications, expanding his practice to include work with Vietnam War veterans, police, fire fighters and assault victims. From 1953 to 1976 Adolph appeared as an expert witness in Federal and Superior Court cases.

In addition to his profession, Adolph loved reading, writing short stories and articles, sailing, and being with friends and family. He had an unquenchable curiosity up to the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne, daughters Janet Walthew (Greg), Anne Whiting, Kristen Moore (Scott), Lisa Olsen (Steve), Stephanie Glass (Mark), son, Marcus (Monique), three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

His ashes will be spread in the waters he loved to sail, northern Puget Sound. A memorial will be held Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 2:30 pm, at the Chateau at Bothell Landing, 17543 102nd Ave. NE, Bothell, WA 98011.

The Mead family was blessed to have the Adolph Whiting family for neighbors. Adolph and Jeanne were so kind to our parents, George and Catherine Mead, as they aged.

Adolph Whiting was a very special man, person, family friend and presence. And he will continue as a presence for colleagues, friends and family! All we have to do is stay in 'touch'!

He was, in my experience, kind, intelligent, broad minded and unceasingly upbeat. Knowing Adolph has been a highlight of my career.

Been so wondering about "Whitey" and Jean. They were such dear neighbors to my parents, George and Catherine Mead, from 1959 until 1994. Our condolences to Jean and family.
