Benjamin Gantt Obituary

Benjamin J. GANTT Jr. Long time Seattle resident and attorney Benjamin J. Gantt Jr. passed away on June 18, 2009. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas on February 26, 1922, he graduated from Princeton University in 1943 and received his law degree from Harvard University in 1948. Ben served in the Marine Corps during WW II and was part of the landing campaign on Iwo Jima and later served on Guam. He married Doris Henrich in New York City in 1946, moved to Seattle in 1948 and became the eighth lawyer for Graham & Dunn, where he remained for 54 years. Ben was a strong booster of Seattle and serve on many professional and community boards. He was past chair of the King County Bar Association Labor and Law Section. He served as Senior Council Member and trustee and secretary to the board of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. He was past president and trustee on the Pacific Legal Foundation, the Alki Foundation, Seattle King County Municipal League, Seattle General Hospital and the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce. Ben also served on the planning commission for Medina and Bellevue and was active with the Horizon House where he resided for the past eight years. Ben was a loving husband and devoted father and is survived by his wife, Doris; three children, Catherine Peltz of Woodbury, Vermont, Peter Gantt of Seattle, Chris Gantt of Bellevue and five grandchildren, Aysha Peltz Wahlstrom, Alex Peltz, Jesse Gantt, Emily Gantt, and Christopher Gantt Jr. and one great grandchild, Ellis Wahlstrom.
