Though Moya had already retied from teaching by the time I was a student at the UW SSW, she often stopped by our dept to speak, mentor, and share her experience as a social worker. Moya was one of the most compassionate and inspirational social workers I've had the pleasure and honor of knowing and learning from. I am thus grateful for the impression she made on me to always fight the good fight, to care and love and endeavor compassion, and to better contribute to the positive of the human condition.
Thank you Moya.

To Moya's family, I wish to extend my deepest-felt condolences. I am a 1986 graduate of the MSW program at the Univ. of WA School of Social Work. My most favorite professor, bar none, was Moya Duplica. Why is that? She was a true teacher who instilled a love of learning in her students, demanded much of them, and gave much to them in return. She was such a poised and beautiful woman who might appear toff but was always easy to approach and had a great wit and wonderful sense of humor. I truly loved her and was blessed to have been her student. . . . "And may she rest in the palm of God's hand . . . " Sincerely, Gail Jahnke

Moya Duplica was a fantastic educator - she was intelligent, thoughtful, engaging, and encouraging. I took several classes from her in the early 1980's; she helped me get in to graduate school by writing a letter of recommendation. She always had a kind word and I feel very fortunate to have been a student of hers. My condolences to her family and friends.

I am greatly saddened by the loss of such an excellent professor. She provided detailed, extensive lectures, and almost as long comments and encouragement in all papers submitted. She gave us all an outstanding example of a dedicated social worker.

Moya was such a gift to us all. She made everyone she interacted with feel special
and that they were dear to her. I found her support during my MSW journey both personal and professional vital to my survival. Later after grad school we were part of group sister city trip to Bersheva in Isreal and shared a room in Jeruselum. It was a special gift to have attend my retirement party after my over twenty agency career. I think of her often and her death will not diminish that.
She was a person with a life well lived.

The news that Moya has passed on is utterly heartbreaking. Beryl Moya Martin Duplica was the epitome of grace, poise, and elegance. Her intelligence was profound, her wit scintillating, her selflessness unparalleled, and her religious faith was deep. Her love of her family was moving, her respect for education was a paramount part of who she was as a creative and vibrant force and her personal power and presence was riveting. Moya knew who she was and this inner knowledge revitalized everyone and everything that she chose to spend her time with or on. Each and every time that you spent time with her, when it was time to leave, you became a better person. Moya was a rare and beautiful woman. She will be missed tremendously by all those that she knew. Farewell, precious one.

Dearest Moya, You indeed have been a very special friend & colleague for more years than I can count. Oh! How I will miss you! Sharing ideas and opinions about professional issues and personal matters with complete trust in one another. . . .
Your thotfulness and wisdom were unbounded. And your sense of humor: I'll never forget your chuckle when John & I discussed roofs and their replacement.
What an amazing time we had in Israel with the SBSSCC. Arriving the evening Yitzhak Rabin was murdered, & later tramping thru the rain to his grave, provided us with so much to reflect upon. Every year (including this one) you have called me at Rosh Hashonah to wish me a good year, and I would get you a Jewish calendar as you once requested. Then we would exchange greetings for Chanukah and Passover and Christmas and Easter. (So what will become of this year's calendar which I still have because I couldn't reach you on the fone!)
And what a superb teacher you were! I don 't remember a retirement party as obviously meaningful to students and alumni as well as to faculty as yours. I still have the Moya button from that occasion. Serving on the Distinguished Alum committee has been an honor, and more so because you were there. Our coffees, lunches, brunches, telefone chats together will always be among my most cherished memories.
Goodbye, dear friend. Rest well.

Noooo! I'm so very sad to read this news! I've loved Moya since 1982, when we met at the UW. We remained close, still meeting for lunch, and chatting up a storm. We did such fun things over the years; picnicking (with wedding cake - white, of course) on Doc Maynard's grave, sipping tea on multiple occasions at the Olympic Hotel, laughing and chatting at various restaurants around town. She and John took me out for my MSW graduation dinner. Wonderful people. I'm so grateful we remained close. She was the most dear and caring of friends. So many wonderful memories...

Moya, you are missed by a multitude of students and faculty . You have enriched the personal and professional lives of so many. For me you embodied what a real social worker is all about, an embodiment that I attribute to but a select few.

Moya was a beloved and admired colleague and friend to me for more than 25 of the 40 years she was a Professor at the School of Social Work before her retirement and since. Many thousands of students learned about our social work profession through her excellence as a teacher and mentor. I heard from several students that often student would give her a standing ovation at the end of class because of the profound impact she had on them and her eloquence as a spokesperson for our profession. Every year almost without fail she was chosen by the BASW students as one of the two professors who they wanted to represent them at graduation and she read each of their names with such respect and grace as they walked across the stage. Her profound legacy will live on through the lives of the clients and communities they serve. I will miss her very much and count myself so very fortunate to have known her. J'May Rivara
