Blake Nordstrom Obituary

Blake Nordstrom

1960 ~ 2019

We’re deeply saddened by the loss of Blake Nordstrom who passed unexpectedly on the morning of January 2, 2019. He was 58.

Son of Bruce and Fran Nordstrom, Blake was born in Seattle, Washington on October 4, 1960. He grew up on Mercer Island, attended Mercer Island High School and the University of Washington. Like his father and grandfather before him, Blake rowed crew for the Huskies and endowed scholarships in their honor at the university.

Everyone who knew Blake knew how much he loved Nordstrom. He would go to great lengths to make personal connections and had an instinctive way of making people feel supported, included and important. In the early 1970s Blake began his career sweeping floors in the stockroom and by 1976, was selling in the downtown Seattle store. He went on to hold various positions in buying and regional management and became president of Nordstrom in 2000 and served as co-president with his brothers Pete and Erik from 2015 to 2019.

For Blake, work was family and family was work. And though serving as co-president with his brothers Pete and Erik was an unconventional corporate structure, it worked well. They divided responsibilities, made big decisions together and pushed the company to adapt and compete in the age of e-commerce.

As their dad Bruce wrote in his 2007 memoir, Leave It Better Than You Found It, “they are as complete and effective a threesome as you could possibly ask for. They are reminded every day that there is a legacy, a standard, a level of performance that was created by the people who preceded them.”

Even given those expectations, Blake’s commitment to upholding that standard of excellence was extraordinary. Today Nordstrom is widely recognized as a leader in the retail industry and the gold standard in customer service.

In addition to his role as co-president and serving on Nordstrom’s Board of Directors, He served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco from 2007 to 2012; and on Board of Directors for The Jim Pattison Group, Canada’s third-largest private company, from 2012 until his passing.

Blake’s kindness and generosity were reflected in his enduring commitment to a thriving Seattle. Long before the recent boom, he was a champion of revitalizing downtown and served on the board of the Downtown Seattle Association. For Blake, Seattle’s homeless crisis was real and immediate, and he was determined to help people in need. As active civic leaders, Blake and his wife Molly chaired the major gifts campaign of the United Way of King County for six years and he was deeply engaged as a University of Washington Rowing Steward. Modest by nature, Blake gave directly to many charities, often quietly or anonymously.

When he wasn’t working, fundraising, or cheering on the Huskies, Blake loved spending time with Molly and his children, Andy and Alex, especially out on the water. Like his father before him, Blake encouraged his children to follow their own interests and pursue their own dreams. Because for him, the Nordstrom name wasn’t ultimately about retailing, it was about being your best self and contributing to the greater good.

“Blake was the best big brother, friend and mentor anyone could ever ask for,” Pete and Erik Nordstrom said in a note to employees. “One of the things that brings us some comfort is that Blake’s values, character and passion can still be reflected in what this company does – how we treat each other, our customers and our communities. Building on that is the best way we can think of to honor his legacy.”

In addition to his wife Molly Nordstrom, father Bruce Nordstrom (wife Jeannie) his brothers, Pete (Brandy) and Erik (Julie), Blake is survived by his children, Andy and Alex. The Nordstrom family asks that people wishing to make donations in Blake’s memory consider the University of Washington Rowing or United Way of King County.

Blake was a tremendous leader who personified the heart and soul of Nordstrom and our values. He was passionate about the people in this company and had a deep connection with those who directly served our customers. The overwhelming outpouring of support and condolences received about Blake is a real testament to who he was, and has been incredibly uplifting and comforting. He will be greatly missed by all of us at Nordstrom.

A community celebration community celebration in honor of Blake Nordstrom will be held at Alaska Airlines Arena (Hec Ed Pavilion) on Saturday, January 12. Doors open at 1:00 p.m. and program starts at 2:00 p.m.

So saddened to hear of Blake's passing! My condolences to Erik and Pete and all the Nordstrom family. I attended MI Jr. High with Erik and Pete and only knew Blake in passing since he was older and already at the high school. (Many fond memories with friends school, skiing, basketball, waterskiing, playing sponge tag and just hanging out at the beach club.) This sudden loss of a loving brother must be so painful to your family. Know that he is in God's hand now and with you always.

I started working for the Nordstrom family when it was just a shoe store. Working for the family for more than 30 years I feel like they are my family also. I am blessed to have learned so many good life lessons from them. Blakes warm smile and kind heart will be missed but it lives on. As a teen he would come into run stock in his swim trunks and tee shirt (with his suit on a hanger if needed) ready to go water skiing. Great Guy!!!

My deepest sympathy to the Nordstrom family. My Auntie Mae who is 90 now helped train Blake and his brothers. Blake as well as Pete and Erik started from the bottom up stocking shoes. When my Aunt retired we had a party at Tai Tung. Even though my Aunt was not an executive, or even a Manager, all the Nordstrom family attended. It's a day I never forgot. I was a year older than Blake at MIHS but I always remember Blake always smiling. On a business trip to Glendale California one year i stopped by to talk to Blake at their then new store at the Galleria. Never forgot that day as well. Well miss you Blake.

REST IN PEACE BLAKE

January 12, 2019

My sincere sympathies to the whole Nordstrom family. Years ago I had ordered 2 dresses for my Mother and Aunt for a wedding held in South Dakota. The orders were mixed up however after contacting Nordstrom by phone they were exchanged at no cost to me. I then received a letter from Blake Nordstrom expressing his apology and sincere concern that it all worked out for us. I never forgot how kind of him to personally write to me over the matter. From all the comments here I was not alone as a recipient of his kindness. Nordstrom has always been a wonderful store and I'm sure it will be in the future with the high standards developed by this family. Again my sincere condolences to all.

I retired 3 years ago from nordstrom.com . I was with the company for 20 years. Blake was one of the kindest and most thoughtful individuals I've ever met. Blake was responsible for us for us having a Bible study or prayer groups in the workplace and he spoke at some of our meetings. My heart goes out to his family. He truly was one of the good guys and will be missed.

My first summer job was running the elevator at Nordstrom's shoe store which consisted of three floors. At that time, Blake's great grandfather was often present, as were his three sons..one of whom was Blake's grandfather.

It is evident to me when reading the lovely words written about Blake, that he was cut from the same cloth as his forebears...who were always pleasant to me, and welcoming to those who came in the door. What an opportunity for me to have had such a wonderful experience, and fond memories of my first employers.

I grew up on Mercer Island and went to school with Blake. Some of the best and longest lasting memories have been what a selfless and caring person he has always been. One night during basketball season we ran late and he stayed behind while I locked up the gym and gave me a ride home. It seems like a small thing but it is the small things that are done without asking that leave the lasting impressions.
He was the first person upon my return to Seattle after my service in USAF that I introduced my wife to. I was parking the car at the Roanoake for a class reunion weekend. I came in to make sure Carol was doing OK to see that Blake had started a conversation with her. Even when it came to someone he had never met he made them feel right at home. The kindness he showed my wife that night has never been forgotten and is a learning lesson for all CEO's in this country that being humble and treating everyone like they are family is what will make you company grow and promote loyalty. This is very evident with Nordstroms.
Rest in Peace Blake you are truly one of the best kind and missed.

I've had the privilege to work for Nordstrom for 17 years now, and got the brief, but memorable opportunity to meet Blake a few years ago when he came into our store. As I nervously waited for him to reach my department after going through others, he approached me- this tall man, with the brightest, warmest big smile. We shook hands, and the handshake lasted much longer than expected! It surprised me that he would put that kind of effort into a simple and quick meeting. But from what I've heard so many times, is that that's how he was with everyone! He was curious as to what I thought we were lacking in my department merchandise-wise, and listened intently as I made the case for items that customers were asking for, that we no longer were carrying. He and other company leaders with him took note, he told me my department looked great, and he moved on. When I learned of his passing, my heart sank and I feel a deep sadness. It has definitely felt like being part of the Nordstrom family all of these years, and no wonder with a leader such as Blake Nordstrom. My sincerest condolences to all of his family. What a rare gem of a human being and businessman. It was an honor to meet you, Mr. Nordstrom. We miss you.

Blake... Meet him at Mercer Island class reunion. At the Roenoke he walked in and asked if I was in his English class. I said No sorry you probably need to find my husband, Craig. He was so excited to see us as we had just returned from being in USAF. As one of my first people to meet since moving here. I felt very much like I had known him for years. Made people feel welcome and at ease with his friendly smile. Met up with him several times after then over the years. He was true and honest. Blessings to the entire family.

I rowed at UW with Blake. He was my classmate and teammate. He was humble then and throughout his life. The corporate world should look at Blake and his family for lessons on how to run a business. Over the years Blake would always get back to me on our occasional contacts, and would recognize a teammate on the streets in downtown Seattle, taking time to chat and catch up. Husky Crew teammates know him on a different level...one of the long line of Boys in the Boat. We have lost a great one...my condolences to the family.

Several years ago I had an issue regarding a pair of shoes I attempted to purchase from Nordstrom in CT.
Much to my surprise, my complaint reached the top.
Mr. Nordstrom telephoned me and when he learned that I was not available to take his call, he left me his cell phone number.
I called back in part to see if it was really him calling me or if someone was playing a joke on me.
It was him! We had a lovely chat and he resolved my issue in a kind, courteous, professional manner.
I am sure there are many, many other stories like mine.He was a true gentleman.
If all businesses had the same attitude, what a wonderful world this would be!

I have worked at Nordstrom for 7 years and I am a foreigner who came from the Uk to work for the Nordstrom brand and of course the family .
Though I haven't worked directly with any of the Nordstrom brothers I have friends who have and their experience has been Inspiring to me .
Blake particularly seemed to be a humble man with real insterest in his customers, staff and the community . I know he will be a massive loss to the business and to his family .
Having suffered the sudden passing of a loved one at a simular age recently I have some understanding of the loss and my heart goes out to his family especially his wife and his children.
The one comfort is the liegacy he leaves behind he was a man with endless energy which he shared with his family, colleagues and community his strong beliefs and kind heart will be a strong light to remember, follow and honor in the days and years to come.

I remember his smile, his firm handshake and his natural ability to make everyone he met feel special. When his daughter was attending one of the Claremont Colleges, he would make several unannounced visits to the Montclair store and each time would walk through greeting customers and staff alike making each one he met feel as if they were a friend . I'll always remember him, always! Gods blessings to Blake's Wife, Daughter, Son, Father and Brothers during this difficult time and always. Rest Peacefully beautiful man.

I was an employee of Nordstrom for 17 years and I met Blake Nordstrom 5-6 times. He was a very nice sincere guy who always remembered names and always smiled. He was one of my favorite Nordstrom brothers. Going to all the company meetings and All Star award recognition I remember him talking on all the videos.
