Curtis Beattie Obituary

Curtis L. BEATTIE On the sunny afternoon of April 14, with our hearts and hands touching, Curt peacefully and quietly left the confines of his body. Born in his beloved Seattle, he never considered living elsewhere. He graduated from the UW School of Architecture in 1969 and opened his own architectural firm in 1981. He took the time to be a generous and devoted husband and father and also loved reading, travel, Husky football, spending time with friends, and especially boating. Diagnosed with Leukemia in 2005 he tried every treatment and was never without hope. His deep sense of pride and dignity moved him to want only the best memories to prevail for those left behind. Every day in a starched dress shirt, he continued to administer the architectural work he loved with the people he loved. He remained cheerful and independent beyond expectations and will forever be in the hearts and minds of his wife, Deb and sons, Joel and Kyle. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.

An Ode to Curt

There once was a young college man named Beattie
Who decided to draw buildings instead of graffiti
After working for Chester
He set out on his own to do better.
as he got older
his designs became bolder
and much to no ones surprise
his 4th and Vine won a prize.
Though his buildings were tall
he loved his boat above all and
pampered it through winter, summer, and fall.
With his craft
(Which was far more than a raft)
he cruised far and wide
with and against the tide.
With his loving family, friends, and hound
He cruised the waters from Olympia
to Desolation Sound.
Now his family and friends and brothers in Lambda Chi
Are met to send Curt off on his cruise to the sky.
Though no longer with us in presence
He will always be cruising with us in essence.

Curt was a wonderful influence on me during our Lambda Chi days at the UW. He was outgoing and had a good sense of humor, but he was also focused on what he wanted at school. He made the important things his priority, and demonstrated the maturity necessary to do that to the rest of us. I miss you Curt.

Here's a photo from 1965 when Curt's priority was seeing me off to Bellingham after I pinned Barbara.

Deb, Joel and Kyle,
I am so sorry for the loss of your husband and Dad. I know it's been such I long time that Mark and I have been in your lives, but we hold your family dear. Curt was such a wonderful example of what a Father and Husband should be. I will never forget all the times I was able to babysit, or housesit so many years ago. I pray you all are holding up well and your memories of good times and love sustain you. Love to each of you, and God Bless.

Dear Deb, Joel and Kyle,
We want you to know what a very dear friend Curt was. He was always made us feel so welcome and was so much fun to be with. We shared so many special times and have such great memories such as Sunday afternoons on the boat at Cozy Cove. He will always be in our hearts.

I tried sending good vibes to Curt the last couple of years from the sunshine of New Mexico...hoping for good news from Seattle. Now he is sending them back to me. Thanks, Curt.

Years of backpacking, weekly handball games, more years of boating together with our best friends and all the years of Founders' Days. Remeber those early years of watching movies together, and watching the kids grow up. All of this comes flooding back. We are all there for you any time Deb. We love you.

Deb, on our in-frequent trips home we always looked forward to getting together with the old gang - You and Curt made us feel welcome - as if we had never left. Our lives are much better having known Curt.
We will miss him.

I'm so proud to have Curt as my uncle. He was a family man and loving father - always kind and caring. I have many fond memories of Curt growing up. His architecture firm designed buildings all over the Seattle area including the one I work in today on Elliott avenue. I brag about Curt and his accomplishments to my co-workers and friends all the time. I often say - Did you know my uncle designed this building?? Joel and Kyle - your father leaves an incredible legacy - one that I know you are very proud of! Deb- I know you are also very proud to have Curt as a loving husband and father. He has inspired many and will be missed greatly. I'm looking forward to celebrating Curt's life together.

Curt (and Deb) so graciously welcomed me into their home (twice!) to live with them for the summer. I had such a great time, and will always appreciate it.
