David LaQuet Obituary

David LaQUET, "La Kay" MAGICIAN, ENTERTAINER, FAMILY MAN AND FRIEND Seattle entertainer Dave LaQuet, aka "La Kay", 69, died May 4 of complications from colon cancer. He is survived by his children: Debra Munro (Sterling), Donna Roddick (Steve), Von La Quet (J-me) and Don La Quet, 12 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. La Kay began singing and performing magic at the age of nine. A '55 graduate of Lincoln High School, he sang the lead in the classic musicals, "Carousel"and "Brigadoon." At Seattle University he formed the vocal quartet "The Pitch Hikers" and performed all over Washington, Idaho, Oregon, and Canada. La Kay married and went to California with his wife, Marilyn to start and family and pursue a solo career. He became the youngest Cruise Director in the history of Matson Navigation aboard the "love boats", S.S. Lurline and S.S. Matsonia. Two years later, he led and managed a highly acclaimed worldwide USO show, "Its Swinging." La Kay later returned to Seattle, playing top area lounges in a piano bar duo during the 70s. During the 80s and 90s Dave performed stage magic and ESP shows at private clubs, parties, and conventions in Washington, Canada, and Hawaii. In 1999, his beloved wife Marilyn passed away, but he continued to perform until his death. La Kay was one of Americas cleverest magicians, billing himself as "The Amazing La Kay" and an expert in paranormal phenomena and ESP. He appeared at the Hollywood Bowl, the Silver Slipper in Las Vegas, and the Tokyo Hilton. Dave also made appearances on the Steve Allen Show in Hollywood, and with many great stars including Bob Hope, Glen Campbell, Loyd Bridges, Martin Denny, and Minnie Pearl. We will always cherish the love and devotion he gave us while on this earth. We find comfort in knowing that he is finally at peace, reunited with our mom. A Celebration of his Life will be held on May 20, 2007, 1:00 p.m., at the North Seattle Eagles, located at 17724 15th Avenue NE, Seattle, WA 98155, 206-367-6096. Memorials should be made to North Seattle Eagles.

My mother, Marjorie Beauchamp, grew up with David and his family. As a result, I have a long list of warm, happy, and often hysterical memories of David, who was a lot older than me and, I thought, so very handsome. He stayed in touch with me throughout the years, even though I lived across the country, and his voice and laughter will forever live in my heart.

I was saddened to hear of Dave's passing. My sister, Janice, was his first assistant in his magic act at Lincoln HS and was in the musicals as his leading lady at Lincoln and Seattle U. He was such a talented and caring person. My prayers are with you during this time.

Dave Laquet was my magic mentor. He and John Carswell.I remember them at the magic club siting in the back cracking jokes and giggling like school children. They reminded me of the two heckalers on the muppet show.I knew they were the ones I needed to talk to. The ones who really knew the ropes. Dave and John thank you, I miss you and I love you.

Dear family,
I was saddened to hear of your Dad's passing. We were in Brigadoon together at Lincoln Hi and I have many fond memories of that musical and of your Dad. We were in San Jose at the same time he was living there but never was able to connect with him to just say hi. He was always so facinating to watch doing his magic acts at assemblies. Just a neat down to earth king of guy. I know this is a very sad time for all of you and my sympathy goes out to all of you.
