Herbert Blackinton Obituary

Herbert James Blackinton, Jr.

Herb, after being diagnosed with cancer in August of 2013, passed away due to complications, on July 4th, 2014. Herb was born on October 14th, 1942 in Aberdeen, WA to his mother and father, Beatrice and Herbert. Herb is survived by his wife, Janice, of 33 years, his sister Renee and her husband Mike, their two sons Jemal and Jason, wives and three grandsons, his brother Dave and his daughter Emily, husband and granddaughter, his son Mike and his four children, Lucie, Jarod, Tara and Kaleb, and his son Steve and his wife Liane, two daughters Felicia and Stephanie along with five great grandchildren, Leticia, Antonio, Chloe, Hayleigh and MacKenzie. Herb preceded in death his son Jeff.

Herb grew up with and continued to stay close with his friends from grade school on - many of which were at his side throughout his battle with cancer. He spent most of his working career in the printing business. In 1981, Herb and his friend Jim Cook started Emerald City Graphics, a successful printing company in Kent, WA.

Herb enjoyed his baseball games at Safeco Field along with the many friends he called family there. He enjoyed Spring Training in Arizona, football and hockey games, fishing on the river and at QCL with his brother-in-law Mike Krokos and taking long walks. He enjoyed sitting at his cabin on Harstine Island watching the eagles soar and the sun rise. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family, mainly the grandchildren and great grandchildren and being able to teach them all that he could. Herb could strike up a conversation with anyone. There was never a person that he met that didn't become a friend. He was hardworking, loving, caring, honest and kind beyond words.

Herb was proud of his Samish Indian heritage, an Elder in the tribe. Through his love of baseball and his very generous heart, he gained the opportunity to serve on the board for both the Moyer Foundation and Northwest Center. He was honored this year by the Moyer Foundation with the Time, Talent and Treasure award.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Children's Therapy Center, 127 SW 156th St, Burien, WA 98168 or the Moyer Foundation, 2426 32nd Ave W, Suite 100, Seattle, WA 98199.

A Celebration of Life will be scheduled in the coming weeks.

I am his great granddaughter and I was only 4 when he passed so I don't remember much. But I can remember that every time I would visit him in the hospital I would go to Safeway and buy him tomato basil soup. And ever since then I will always think of him when I have some tomato basil soup. I love and miss you papa

Herb and I met in 1959, on the Sealth football team, In 1961 my brother played in the Huskies marching band and Herb and I with my family attended the Rose Bowl. We drove down in the old 52 ford and had a hell of a time! Herb was my best man at my first wedding in 1972. I am also Mike's Godfather. I don't know what else I can say, except Herb was a true friend, and I'll will miss him dearly. I am also greatfull for the way he got all the old friends together. He was a great guy, an insperation to me. John Richard
