Jack Soldate Obituary

Jack Douglas SOLDATE Born February 24th, 1940, died October 7th, 2006 of natural causes. Jack was internationally well known and loved for his 40+ years of humanitarian service to the third world- mostly in Africa. He earned his Bachelors Degree from University California Santa Barbara, attended Hastings Law School and read his Masters Degree in West African History at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. Overseas service and travel began in 1962 when Jack joined the Peace Corps contingent to serve in "up country" Liberia. This sparked a long professional career in all aspects of Third World international service. As the youngest Field Director ever hired by C.A.R.E., he rose to Country and Regional Assistance Director. He often negotiated C.A.R.E.'s country agreements regarding school feeding, pre- and post-natal mother-child clinics, self-help and food for work projects. His later career branched into refugee relocation and resettlement. Extended overseas assignments included Sierra Leone, Turkey, Bangladesh, India and Niger with shorter stints in Angola, Bosnia, Ethiopia, Iraq, Ivory Coast, Mali, Russia, Senegal, Somalia, Mauritania, Chad, Mali, Upper Volta, South Africa, and Thailand. Service stateside at both the South West Regional Development Office and as the Director of Development for the Northwest United States familiarized him with the fund raising aspects of providing humanitarian relief. He originated the C.A.R.E. breakfast series inviting important Seattle decision makers to factual updates on the relevant Third World issues. His service as Executive Director of the American Refugee Committee worked in close cooperation with UNHCR and UNDP administering assistance to refugee camps in Thailand. His most recent engagement was in Washington DC with USAID Food for Peace. On a more personal note, he is lovingly remembered for his joie de vivre, warming smile and laugh, vast knowledge of classical music and the arts, fine cuisine and the extraordinary ability of making each one us feel treasured and loved. His life was full of adventures that he made happen; Each of us were generously invited along for the ride. He is survived by a brother, Joe Soldate, childhood sweetheart, former-wife and friend, Marilyn Soldate, and daughter, Swarn Soldate. Services will be held at Bleitz Funeral Home in Seattle on Wednesday, November 1st at 230 p.m. Photos may be viewed at www.mem.com, search name Soldate. Remembrances in his name may be sent to C.A.R.E. or the San Francisco Opera.

1963 Jack and I traveled from the coast of Liberian to Cote d'lvoire on money buses arriving in Abidjan and spending a coulple of hours drinking scotch with Gene Kelly on our trip to explore the countries of West Africa. Gene Kelly was on a US sponsored performance and staying the just opened stated of the art hotel. The next day we were on a train to Bouke for one night then off on the train to the Bobo-Dioulasso in Burkina Faso. We then took a Bus accross the sahel to Niamey the capital of Niger. The next day we took a money bus to Maradi and then a different bus at Maradi and then by bus again into Kano, Nigeria. At Kano we took a train down to Lagos and caught a freighter back to Monrovia, Liberia. A trip of a life time

Reading Jack's obit was like rereading a dream of a life I wish I had led. He was clearly in possession of an epic life. My mouth dropped when reading it. Way to go Jack. And best wishes to the family. Andy Hanson (Liberia 1 1962-64)

My name is George Koch and I had the pleasure to serve in the Peace Corps in Liberia (1962-1964) with Jack. More importantly I traveled with Jack and his Peace Corps room mate Bob Sadler on a three day walk about in the Liberian bush. Jack and I on a summer vacation traveled overland to Ivory Coast, Upper Volta now Burkina Faso, Niger and Nigeria. What a great trip and what stories we had to tell. Will miss Jack and the warmth and humor he brought to all of us.

I was lucky to have spent time in the fall of 2005 at our Peace Corps reunion and this year we had dinner while he was working in the District of Columbia.

To My Friend Jack,
Enjoyed our conversations, enjoyed the bar crawls, but most of all enjoyed the friendship form Atlanta to Seattle. Gald we made contact again in the last couple of years. I know I am better for it. I will miss you.

My
name is Drury Ross. I was in Jack's 7th grade homeroom class. I will
never forget the skit our class did during the nomination assembly
because Jack did some funny things and stoled the show. I remember well
Jack's talent of identifying operas or classical music by just humning a
few bars for him. We have all lost a great classmate! He will be missed!

Jack and my brother, John Lewis, were close buddies growing up, so Jack was often at our house. I especially remember his sense of humor. My condolences to the family; I'm sure he'll be missed by many.

Jack was a very good childhood friend and he will be missed. I'm sorry I didn't know him as he grew older, but he was always laughing and full of fun as a young man. He sounds as though he grew into a fine man, one that his family would be very proud of. His friend, Linda Green Strickland
