John Schwartz Obituary

John Henry SCHWARTZ John Henry Schwartz died peacefully in his home on Friday, January 10, 2003, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Seattle on September 30, 1949 to Lawrence and Claire Benaroya Schwartz, John graduated from Franklin High School in 1968. While serving in the United States Army Reserves, John attended Highline and Bellevue Community Colleges. John began his long and illustrious career in the restaurant business with Dag's Drive-In Restaurants while still in high school. He began working in the kitchen of The Butcher Restaurant in Bellevue with its opening in 1970. He quickly worked his way up through management, and after several other restaurant openings became a full partner with his older brother Bill following the opening of Henry's Off Broadway restaurant in Seattle in 1977. John and Bill, through their Schwartz Brothers Restaurants partnership, went on to create and operate many additional restaurant concepts throughout the greater Seattle area and beyond including Daniel's Broiler, Chandler's Crabhouse and Fresh Fish Market, and Spazzo Mediterranean Grill and Tapas Bar. The company operates the Schwartz Brothers Bakery and Gretchen's Shoebox Express through a partnership with Gretchen Mathers. John was very involved in many local arts and charitable organizations. He served on the Board of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, PONCHO (president -1995, and Lifetime Trustee), and United Way (President's Cabinet). John is survived by his wife, Stacy, and their children Alexandra and Tyler, as well as John's children Jaclyn, Mackenzie, and Jake, his brother, Bill (sister-in-law Debbie), nephews Lindsey, Danny, Ricky Schwartz and niece Joelle Kantor, brother Michael (sister-in-law Kandy) and niece Karen and nephew David Schwartz. In-laws Bill and Leah Winslow, and Stacy's brother Bill and sisters Belinda and Kelly also survive him. He fought a long and courageous battle against Multiple Myeloma (blood cancer) and his family wishes to thank personal friend and doctor, Bob Bjurstrom, and Dr. William Bensinger, and the other doctors and nurses at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the University of Washington Hospital for their wonderful care. Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m., Sunday, January 12, 2003, at Green Funeral Home. 1215 - 145th Pl. SE, Bellevue, with burial at adjacent Sunset Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, 1100 - Fairview Ave. N. Seattle, WA 98109. and the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, 3 - Forest Street, New Canaan, CT 06840.

John was a wonderful man and a great boss. I enjoyed working for him for 9 years at Cucina! Cucina! Inc. I thank him for everything he taught me and the motivation he gave me. We will all miss him very much!
