Kevin Moriarty Obituary

Kevin James Moriarty

A life-long resident of Seattle, WA, died unexpectedly on March 28, 2015 at the age of 61 from a sudden heart attack.

Kevin is survived by his wife, Cathy Moriarty (ne Flaherty); his brother Patrick Moriarty (Marsha Hahn), his sisters Kathleen Lovejoy (Mike) and Theresa Moriarty (special friend Craig Wilson); his sister-in-law Leslie Moriarty; his children, Casey (Susan), Tim, Mary Kost (Jimmy), Brigid, and Theresa; and his four grandchildren Madeline and James Kost and Claire and Beatrice Moriarty; and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother, Stephen Moriarty; his mother, Theresa Moriarty; and his father, Jack Moriarty.

Kevin was born in Seattle on November 12, 1953 to Jack and Theresa Moriarty. He graduated from Queen Anne High School in 1972, and attended the University of Washington Professional Actor Training Program. On March 18, 1978, he married his soulmate and other half Cathy, a fellow life-long resident of Seattle.

Kevin was a devoted husband and father who always put his family first. Without fail, he could be counted on to provide wise advice in times of distress and comfort in times of sorrow. His incredible Irish sense of humor, infectious laugh, and kind heart brought happiness and joy to so many.

Kevin had a passion for the theater and wrote a play titled "A Rose for Danny" that he perfected over many years. The 3-act play was based on the true story of the life of Kevin's grandfather. The play was produced last March thanks to the generous support of his friends and family for which he was so grateful.

He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who knew him.

Recitation of the Rosary will be

Wednesday, April 1, at 10:30 a.m. followed by Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. BOTH at St. Anne's Catholic Church. Fr. Lyle Konen, C.Ss.R. will officiate.

Dear Cathy and Family,

This morning, Good Friday, I picked up my cellphone while my other hand was opening the door of my morning casework. I was so surprised to hear the news and can only remember so well Kevin's purity of heart and purpose, his commitment to the Lord and all that is true. I also recall reading about his play down here in Portland and was surprised to hear this as I did not know of his acting and playwright abilities and talents...a reflection of his own humility...virtue hides itself!

Please know that at our Good Friday gathering this afternoon before the Cross I prayed for Kevin, you and your family. I will have a Mass said for him and all of you in the near future.

Please accept my condolences, my sadness to know he is gone now....but see him as well as another friend and soul to ask for prayers for those of us still down here below.

God bless you, Cathy and to all your family and loved ones who hold Kevin particularly in their hearts.

When we die to ourselves, we no longer belong to ourselves but to Christ...and in Christ we are all one body....his presence missed.

I acted opposite Kevin in 4 shows: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest & The Rope at Shoreline Community College, in Death of a Salesman we played brothers Biff & Happy at the Driftwood Players in Edmonds, and finally in 2 productions of A Rose for Danny staged at SCC. He was truly an amazing actor and a very good friend. I will miss him always.

Cathy & Family,
Kevin and I worked together for several years at Darigold. I can't begin to tell you how sorry I am that he has passed. He was truly a kind and thoughtful man. He always talked about how proud he was of his family.

I remember going to see Kevin's play at the community college and was so impressed.

When my father passed away, Kevin took the day off of work to show his support for my family and sang a wonderful Irish song at my father's gravesite. It was a touching moment and a moment that my family has never forgotten and remembers fondly. This was just one act of many that Kevin did for the kindness of others.

I am grateful that I had the opportunity to know this man. A very good man indeed!

Dear Cathy and family,
Kevin and I were St. Anne's classmates; his handsome young face smiles back at me from a mid 1960s photo. We missed each other at a fall, 2012 reunion, but I had been following his success as a playwright. He has left you a legacy of love and although it has been years and we are many miles away from Seattle, I share your sorrow. You are all in my prayers,

I was deeply saddened to learn today of Kevin's recent passing. I knew him well as kids growing up in the neighbourhood on Queen Anne, and then again in high school. After a long silence we reconnected over the past few years after a high school reunion, and I was very happy to find how well he had been doing after so many years. My deepest condolences to all his family and friends whom he left behind way too soon.
