Larry Holder Obituary

Larry R. Holder M.D.

With a vastly heavy heart, we announce the passing of Dr. Larry Russell Holder.

Larry was born March 18, 1961, and lost his brave battle to glioblastoma on July 12, 2018. He was only 57 years old.

Born in Waco, TX to Billie & Jimmie Holder, Larry was raised in Lubbock, the middle of three siblings.

A proud graduate of Texas A&M, he received his doctorate at Vanderbilt University.

Hired in 1991 by Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle, Larry was an outstanding radiologist. Praised by resident and attending physicians alike, his professionalism and good humor made him valued by all. In fact, the Virginia Mason Residents Award was named after him in 2017.

Larry loved his family, travel, chicken fried steak, cats, and naps. He and husband Randy spent quite a bit of time in Palm Springs, where we were fortunate to have another city of friends to laugh and dine with.

Larry leaves behind a tremendously sad array of family & friends. His husband, Randy Brown, father Jimmie Holder, sister Lanie Thornton (John), brother Jamie Holder (Wendy), and so many others that will mourn him for a very long time. Larry was a happy man of quick wit and gentle kindness. That is a rare combination, and one to be treasured.

Virginia Mason Hospital was not only Larry's workplace, but our medical team throughout this ordeal. I cannot begin to tell you how much savvy and kindness was shared with us. Drs. Lynne Taylor and Joshua Wilfong led the charge and we are forever grateful. We were blessed to have Evergreen Hospice and Helping Hands on our side through these last few weeks. Notably, the amazing Carol, loving Ann, and the marvelous Maggie. Both of these organizations are outstanding and constantly conveyed their love and attention to our needs.

Larry was predeceased by his mother, Billie, and will join her at the Texas A&M Aggie Field of Honor. Services to be held in College Station. A Seattle Celebration for Larry will be held in the near future.

Please know that the best way to memorialize Larry is to grab the people you love and remind them of that love.

Makes all the difference.

Larry is a man to be mourned but lived a life to be celebrated. We shall honor that.

I was just thinking of you Larry the other day when I got a couple of MRIs and how you would so patiently walk me few the ones I had at Virginia Mason. I miss you so much. Oh, and my son Jeff, who is now 51!,has recently discovered the joys of the more mature Palm Springs community. Reminds me of you also. Much love always.

The other day one of the radiologists & I were chatting about what a great guy Larry was. So smart, but more about how kind he was. His friendly, gentle presence is continually missed at VM.

There are some amazing radiologists at Virginia Mason and Larry Holder was among the highest. His knowledge, compassion, humor and gentleness are a few reasons we loved and enjoyed working with him.
We Radiologic Technologists in CT, and certainly throughout all of radiology, are deeply saddened and will truly miss our good doctor.
Blessings to all who knew Larry.
