Dear Family,

This connection of the Carstens and Keplers goes back to the Depression. My Grandfather saw a boy picking up coal in a bucket on the railroad tracks after work. Grampa coaxed him into coming home with him for supper. After eating he filled the bucket with coal for Leonard to take home. They met the next night and repeated. Leonard told reluctantly that his family would soon be orphaned... Grampa invited Leonard to stay and help take care of my dad, Leroy, who was bed ridden and in poor health. They became best of friends. Leonard moved to Alaska and became a bush pilot. He returned several times to Davenport, Iowa to buy flour, supplies and stopped in to see my dad. This was one of the few exceptions growing up when I was allowed to stay up late.

My dad passed away in 1993.

When we vacationed out west a few years ago my wife, daughter, her friend, and I stopped in to visit Leonard in his home. It was a very special time for me. Holding Leonard's hand was like holding my Dad's. They were both very good and very kind men. We will always remember Leonard and how special he was to the Carstens. My Mom is 90 and we send all our best to you.

God Bless

John, Sue, Gert, Sam, and Anna Carstens, Roseau.

PS. Special Hello to Nick Rodriquez of Horicon from Sam
