Patrick Gogerty Obituary

Patrick Gogerty

Patrick "Pat" Gogerty, born September 12, 1929, passed away peacefully August 26, 2016, after a long battle with heart disease.

He is survived by his children Rod (Jenny), Hattie (Lalo), and Patrick (Brooke); and grandchildren Isaiah, Joaquin, Tatum, Graham and Maya. He is preceded in death by his wife Maggie and brothers Bill, Daniel, Jerry, and Bob.

Pat was born in Sprague River, Oregon, and raised in Seattle where he spent most of his life. He served honorably in the United States Army and dedicated his life to helping children. He began his career working with emotionally disturbed and delinquent children, most of whom had been physically or sexually abused. Recognizing the connection between abuse and subsequent emotional problems and delinquency, and driven by his own history of being physically abused as a small child, Pat founded Childhaven to provide early intervention and therapy for abused and neglected children. Through Childhaven Pat dedicated himself to the mission of helping the youngest victims of abuse and bettered the lives of countless children and families in the Puget Sound area.

All who knew Pat personally will miss his sharp wit, his encyclopedic memory, and, most of all, his kindness.

Pat's family encourages remembrances to Childhaven (childhaven.org/donations) to continue his legacy of helping children in need.

As a parent that had 3 lovely children attend Childhaven in the 90's, have grown up to be thriving adults now, I am grateful to his vision and his plan to see that all children had a safe place to grow, learn and be loved on by amazing staff when life started out a bit rough for the parents. We too benefited from the services at Childhaven!!!

We didn't get to be around him much but for brief moments but through the staff and partners at Childhaven, his spirit of love and kindness was shared abundantly with my family. May his memory and compassion live on for many, many more years!!

I worked for Pat from 1975-1980. He was a mentor and a friend. He was one of the most interesting and knowledgeable people I have ever met. His passion for helping young abused children was unparalleled. He was one of a kind. I will always remember him with fondness.

I very much enjoyed the time I spent talking to Pat over the past 15 years. He was immensely supportive of my decision to foster and adopt, and was fond of calling BS on me and making me defend my position on any subject. He loved a good argument!
I missed him when he moved from Vashon and now I'll miss him even more.
What a remarkable, kind man.

As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.

i have never enjoyed eating dinner with another person like I did with Pat. He was sharp and he knew and had lived through modern history. His personal experiences gave great depth and meaning to our conversations. We disagreed on many subjects which did not stop us from enjoying each others company.
I never had a chance to have a talk about Trump. I think I am glad for that.
I admired his compassion, passion, and his big heart. Pat was a man of stature and greatness for me. His love for his children was remarkable. I hope we meet again.
