Farewell to a Seattle son

"He was a perfect combination of head, heart and hands."

-- Jim Youngren, Director,

Long Live the Kings

Dr. Peter D. Grimm, a clinical radiation oncologist who became an international leader, educator, entrepreneur and inventor in the field of prostate cancer, died Saturday, February 20, 2016. He was also known as a dedicated fisherman and was a leader and activist dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of Pacific Northwest wild salmon. He was 63 and died in Seattle where he was born and raised.

The cause was congestive heart and kidney failure, the final outcome of a pneumonia diagnosed at the end of 2015. He worked joyfully (and determinedly) for years while under treatment for heart and kidney insufficiencies, and had an array of other chronic disorders.

Peter was a private practice physician who collaborated nationally and internationally with academic physicians and other clinical doctors to conduct research into the diagnosis and outcomes of prostate cancer treatment. His specialty was brachytherapy, a minimally invasive surgery that plants tiny short-lived radioactive seeds next to cancer cells. Introduced in Europe, he and his partner Dr. John Blasko of the Swedish Hospital Tumor Institute Group brought it to the United States and pioneered its development and implementation in the US in the late 80's. In 2012, he left the group to establish the Prostate Cancer Treatment Center. Over his lifetime he has personally treated more than 6,000 patients and trained more than 6,000 physicians in the procedure. He travelled throughout the world giving lectures, training, and consulting with policy makers in countries such as Japan, Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Mexico, Argentina, and Spain. In addition to the numerous articles he published in scientific journals, he was the lead author of the Prostate Cancer Treatment Book, a handbook for patients with chapters written by an international expert in each treatment choice. He founded the Prostate Cancer Treatment Foundation, whose mission and purpose is to help patients make informed choices about treatment. It allows a patient to compare 10 -year outcomes of every treatment plotted against his cancer stage utilizing the results of every article on cancer treatment published world-wide. He was constantly imagining improvements in diagnosis and treatment, and over the years was granted 3 patented improvements which are use today.

Though his accomplishments were admired and respected, Peter always attributed his success to the support, inspiration, and compassion given him along the way. He said, "I learned you didn't have to know how to do everything, you just needed to know someone who did." He was also open about his own struggles, because as he said, "It isn't about the falling down, it's about the getting up." Born the middle son of nine brothers and raised on Capitol Hill with the other large Catholic families of the 50's, Peter developed a lifelong sense of the joy of the loyalty and inclusion that derive from team play. He never forgot those Jesuits who mentored him through his teen years at Seattle Preparatory School ('70) and Seattle University ('74). He was a lifetime supporter of their mission of inclusion and justice. He was grateful to the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (now Midwestern University) for accepting him after a slew of rejections from other schools. It was during this period that he met, Dawn Winters and her daughter, Robyn Bell. They married and became a family in 1978 five months before he began his internship at Eastmoreland General Hospital in Portland. His experiences led him to pursue a residency in Radiation Oncology at UCLA where Peter said people much smarter than he was taught him a lot. He was thrilled to be accepted to the Swedish Hospital Tumor Institute Group, and returned to his beloved Seattle in 1985. Peter was an explorer and innovator with an entrepreneurial spirit, and the Tumor Institute gave him leeway to execute his ideas.

When he returned to Seattle and his love of boating and fishing, Peter noticed a degradation of the fishing fields. He connected with other concerned people and began raising salmon fry in incubators on at his cabin on Hood Canal. He joined a consortium of fishermen, scientists, tribes, government entities and citizen known as the Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group and later was honored to be on the board of Long Live the Kings, an organization that seeks to coordinate the efforts of salmon groups across the state.

He stayed connected to his Osteopathic colleagues, and felt privileged to be asked onto the board of The Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences, a new medical school starting up in Yakima. One of his proudest moments of 2015 was the graduation of the school's first contingent of medical students. Right up to the end he was continuing to build his network of "smarter people."

A large part of his life and legacy has been to encourage the dreams and passions of those he befriended along the way. He will be sorely missed by his patients, his staff, his colleagues, friends, and all the young people he counselled. He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Adrienne, his nephew, Christian Montegut, his father, Huber K. Grimm, and his mother Georgia MacAdam Grimm. He will be remembered with laughter and tears by his wife, Dawn, his son Justin, his daughter Robyn (Omar) Vera, his three grandchildren, Daniel, Malik, and Alexandra, his daughter-of-the-heart, Jackie Gonsier, his eight brothers Thomas (Gari), Robert Grimm, SJ, Larry (Barb), Gerry (Betsy), Chris (Wendy), Paul, Scott (Karin), Patrick (Nancy), one sister, Suzie (Monte) and his mother-of-the-heart Mrs. Roy (Louise) Beaumont, his nephews and nieces and a large extended clan.

Memorial Services will be held

on Saturday, March 5 at 10:00 am

at St. Joseph's Catholic Church,

732 18th Ave E, Seattle, 98112.

Hard to believe its been two years since Peter's passing. I think of him often and especially so when getting my bi-annual PSA test results. Last one of .4 in December, 2018. My life is so vibrant because of Peter. While he was with us, his was vibrant, caring and so kindly personal. Prayers to all his family, friends and patients.

I, William Howard III, received brachytherapy treatment from Dr. Grimm on August 3, 2011 at the Treatment Center in Poulsbo, WA. I was hon-ored that Dr. Grimm brought SEVEN students in to view my procedure. Dr. Peter saved my life, and I will always pray for him and his family.

Dr. Grimm was a truly fantastic man. He was so kind to let me shadow him in my undergrad and was instrumental in getting me to where I am today by writing me a letter of recommendation that helped get me into the medical school I'm currently attending. I didn't know Dr. Grimm had passed away. I just happened to think about him today only to find out he has been gone a year to the day. I bawled when I saw that he had passed. He is truly someone I will always look up to as a mentor in medicine and he is one of the reasons I decided to pursue oncology. His bedside manner was unparalleled and you could see he truly cared for all his patients so fervently. I can only hope to be half as good a doctor and person as he was. My sincerest condolences to his family and patients.

I certainly wasn't happy to learn I had prostate cancer, but I can't believe my good fortune to find Dr. Grimm to manage my treatment through my 2 bouts with the disease. He was a doctor who truly cared for his patients and devoted his life to finding successful ways to treat prostate cancer. Dr. Grimm was wonderful person and it is so sad we lost a doctor so devoted to his patients.

I was recommend by my friend Anna Dupen to go see Dr Grimm as she and her husband Stewart knew of his professional expertise in the field of prostate cancer. Anna,my wife Coleen and I met with Peter and he recommended I read his book and then decide what method I wished to take.I was all in with Peter's seed implant.
After three years my psa started to rise so i called Peter and asked him if he had a new club called recurrence?. He said yes and there were 5 people in the new group. He told me that he was using the newest detection of prostate cancer using the same procedure that was used in women breast cancer. i had the scan and he read it and found there areas that the cancer was. Dr Green treated me with Cryo and my psa is now 0. Peter was a true blessing in my life. Peter was a true scientist and a doctor who cared deeply about his patients. My he RIP.

We were so happy to have known him. He took time with us during the period when my husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer. As we sat in his office and he shared what the procedure would be like. I sat with tears rolling down my face knowing that his plan would work. He was so kind, supportive and effective. Our love and prayers go out to his family at this time of great loss.

My deepest condolences to Dawn and Peter's family. Although we didn't keep closely in touch over the years, I did occasionally give him a call when visiting my son and daughter who both live in Seattle.
Peter and I were brought together in osteopathic medical school through a traditional bonding process that was time-honored in days gone by; we were dissecting partners on "Alice" from whom we learned human gross anatomy.
I have many fond memories of Peter and the others during our days at CCOM.
May his memory be from a blessing......

we are forever grateful to you Doc

We have lost a national treasure.
Our hearts are broken for the great loss of this extraordinary human being. Our prayers go out to all his beloveds.
I recall spending 2+ hours with him and the flood of peace and assurance that my husband and I experienced on our drive home after being in his presence and receiving his counsel.
He carried a clear confidence in his field, compassion in his care, excellence in his execution of therapy and humor through it all. He was warm and brought order to our chaos and questions.
It was evident that he lived life well, loved nature, loved his family and was so glad seeing people heal, thrive and embrace life.
We are forever grateful,
God's blessing

I miss my Friend, and my Doctor, very much. In my 75 years of life, I have NEVER known a Doctor as dedicated to helping people. He was always there to help me, my friends, and of course everyone that asked for his help.

I will always remember his dedication as early on in our relationship, I asked him if he would speak to a group of people where I live which is an over age 55 resort community in Redmond. He of course said yes. Not knowing how many people would attend, I asked him what the minimum number of attendees would need to be there in order to make it worth his time and travel? He responded...ONE! That response almost brought me to tears as I quickly learned what a wonderful man he is. As it turned out, there was 60 to 80 people in attendance. After the meeting many people thanked me for having him speak to them.

Great Big Heavenly Hugs to my Dear Friend. I miss you very much!

Andrew "Doug" Batchelor

March 18, 2016

Way back in the year 2002, I was referred to Dr. John Blasko, Dr. Grimm's associate. At that time, there were three physicians practicing together... Dr. John Sylvester being the other partner.

Dr. Blasko performed the treatment for me and I returned to see him many times until he retired. Shortly after Dr. Blasko retired, the two remaining partners left the Prostate Cancer Institiute near Swedish Hospital and formed the Prostate Cancer Center. I chose to follow them.

I began seeing Dr. Sylvester for my annual checkups until he departed for Florida in 2011.

Finally, I got to be Dr. Grimm's patient! While I admired and respected both Doctors Blasko and Sylvester, I found myself thinking of Dr. Grimm more as a friend than just "my doctor." His down-to-earth style of patient care was unlike any doctor I had ever known. He was passionate about brachytherapy and enlisted his patients to join him in getting information to others about this treatment. He fought for the continued use of PSA as a reliable indicator of early stage prostate cancer when it is most treatable.

I am living proof this treatment works as I have been cancer-free for 13 1/2 years.

But the real irony of my relationship with Dr. Grimm was the fact that my son made contact with him not knowing he had been my treating physician for years. My son was aspiring to get into medical school and had applications in many med schools. He decided to take the advice of his counsellors and contact a radiation oncologist to "shadow" him for a full day. How he managed to contact Dr. Grimm and set up the opportunity to learn about brachytherapy is unknown to me. Out of the blue, he said to me, "Dad, I am going to go to Seattle and be with a cancer doctor."

I asked him, "Really? What kind of cancer doctor are you going to be with? My cancer doctor is in Seattle. Who is he?" He said, "Well, his name is Dr. Peter Grimm."

I was really taken aback and I guess it is true about it being a small world!

When my son came back from Seattle, I asked him what he thought of Dr. Grimm. He said he thought he was a brilliant doctor and was patient, kind and thorough in explaining everything he did. He said, "Dr. Grimm is a great Doctor!"

I couldn't agree more!

When I next returned for an annual check-up, I mentioned he had mentored my son. I watched his face as he "connected-the-dots!" Dr. Grimm said, "Yes, I remember your son, Tim. He is a very smart young man and will make a great Doctor. I didn't realize until now he was your son!"

For several more years, Dr. Grimm would ask about my son. Tim did get into medical school and is just now completing his second year..

I don't know if his shadowing Dr. Grimm tilted the balance in my son's favor in getting admitted in to med school but I do know my son learned a lot more than just brachytherapy from Dr. Grimm. He learned what a great doctor really is!

I will miss you greatly, Dr. Grimm!

I,like many who have responded to Dr. Grimm's passing, was his patient. We first met in late 2006, after a friend recommended I see him before choosing any other method of PC treatment.

My wife and I were very lucky to have made that first visit. It was extremely shocking to hear of his passing since we had last met on Nov. 30, 2015. And, as I had come to expect, I was still essentialy cancer free after 9 years.

Along the journey of visits, we had come to respect and admire Dr. Grimm for his wit, sincerity, and deep concern for his patients and fellow man.We actually looked forward to those office visits, and to glean just a little bit more from this great person and doctor.

Each year when our visit is due, and many times in between, I will think of this man who left us too soon, but saved another human so that they could continue to persue their life and dreams.

Simply put, he was the best.

Condolences from our family to Peter's family.

My cousin Pete lived an extraordinary life.
While our lives led us in different directions and because of time, distance, careers and kids we rarely reconnected, I'll always remember our great times together.

I'll always remember the summer Uncle Hube and Aunt Georgia invited me to spend the summer cruising the San Juan's. Pete, Jerry and I had the greatest time.

Since his passing, I've had time to reflect and read the many condolences and I am struck by all of the love and admiration given.Pete achieved success few ever attain.

God Bless You Pete, your family and all you touched with your medical gifts.

From my family to yours, rest in peace and in the loving arms of our lord.

I entered Dr. Grimms world in 2012 presenting a challenging case. Immediately I could tell this was a specialists specialist. I was the 2nd person to be diagnosed with his new innovative approach for people with rising PSA and negative biopsies. His program for me was swift, decisive and no nonsense. His patience, knowledge, expertise, wit and wisdom was a real eye opener. After four years of exceptional failure by a local "specialist", Dr. Grimm's treatment was ground breaking, compassionate, and professional by comparison.
Dr. Grimm redefined my concept of friendship. I rarely spoke of him to others unable to describe his qualities and attributes. I will continue to expose others to his PCRSG results, brachy, and his innovation in PCa diagnosis. He has saved the lives and sanity of hundreds if not thousands.
Humble doesn't begin to describe him.
I can only believe Dr. Grimm will some day hear the words, "Job well done, my good and faithful servant".

Peter treated my partner Gregg for prostate cancer. We both loved him, he was a magnificent human being as well as a great doctor. Once I told Peter: 'Your courage is contagious.' It was, and is, and will be for the rest of my life. We are supremely lucky to have had him in our lives.

The first time I met Peter, I knew he was the doctor I wanted to guide me through my life with cancer. That night was the first night i slept through the night.
Peter made you feel like you were his only patient. He was comforting, compassionate, beyond competent, a great listener, offered the plan that met my needs and he was also a fly and salmon fisherman. We had a lot to talk about.
I remember bringing in a picture of a salmon I'd caught and he joked that he wasn't that old that I couldn't share pics of pretty girls too.
We also talked about shrinking the size of my prostate and for a number of reasons decided not too. One of the reasons on the list was the math issue. Peter said he didn't feel comfortable having to divide my PSA by 2.
My sincere condolences to Peters family, friends, office associates, the cancer providers.
You touched my life Peter and you will be dearly missed. Because of your help, I hope to see you later than sooner.

March 5, 2016

I was one among the many of Peter's patients. For that I owe him my life.

Peter was an extraordinary physician but even a better person. Preeminent among his peers for his knowledge, innovation and skills, still, for me and assumedly many others it was Peter's kindness, empathy and humor that counted so much.

One is understandably and horribly frightened when diagnosed with cancer, regardless of how optimistic the prognosis. Peter understood that. He consistently took the time to explain, assure and encourage. Stated differently, Peter had a peerless "bedside manner", important indeed among his other and endless talents.

Peter will be sorely missed by all whose lives he touched.

I don't have the right words to express how sad I was to learn that Peter passed. He was an amazing man and compassionate physician who brought hope, strength and fun to everyone he touched. I am so proud to have worked for him and will always remember and appreciate his insights, sense of humor and the dedication he gave his patients, family and friends. He told me more than once that he probably wouldn't live a long life but that he was going to live a passionate life dedicated to helping his patients and supporting his family and friends. He was a wonderful force of nature, and leaves a legacy that many will continue to benefit from in the years to come. RIP Peter, you are missed!

I can't begin to say how deeply saddened I am by the passing of my good friend Peter Grimm. He was such a big part of my life ever since our college years at Seattle University. He introduced me to my wife Teresa, was the best man at our wedding, and came to see us in Virginia when I was in graduate school and he was in medical school in Chicago. We reconnected after we both returned to Seattle and Teresa and I have spent so many wonderful times with Peter and Dawn since then - weekends at Hood Canal, vacations at Roche Harbor, trips to Hawaii, Husky football games, salmon fishing trips, and just getting together for dinner, drinks and cigars like close friends do. Peter treated my Dad for prostate cancer (he is still doing great at 88) and he was so generous to our whole family. Life will not be the same without him.
My deepest sympathy to Dawn, Robyn, Justin, and all the family for your loss.
Peter, I already miss you so much. When my time comes, I'll look for you on the other side.

To my mentor, my friend, and a great healer. There are a countless number of people who are alive and well because of your compassion and genius. When you were teaching me my craft you gave me two gifts, one is physical, the other spiritual. Every day I look at the physical one which rests on my desk and use it to teach resident physicians about the history of our field and pass on a little bit of your wisdom. The other I pass on to my patients with a near painless procedure you co-invented that eradicates their cancers.

A third gift I keep in my tackle box--the PCTRF Salmon Cancer Slammer Lure. Tight lines my friend.

I was very shocked and saddened to hear of Dr. Grimm's passing. The description that Mr. Youngren quoted in the obituary was perfect. Dr. Grimm was certainly the perfect combination of head, heart and hands. He first treated my prostate cancer with brachytherapy about nine years ago. He would followup on my status annually and when I had a re occurrence last spring, he quickly coordinated the process for additional treatment. His compassion combined with his personal empathy and medical expertise made him very special. I'll never forget first coming to his office and meeting patients from across the country who told me, "You have come to the best doctor there is for this type of cancer" I certainly agree!
He always had time to share a fishing story, tell you about the progress of the Foundation and listen to a story or two from his patients; especially if they involved fishing.
Dr. Grimm, you will be badly missed but never forgotten.

We would like to offer you our thoughts and prayers - to weather this loss of your brother, husband, father, uncle , Pete.
Pete and his wife just this last year moved into our neighborhood on the lower Hill; and we simply hadn't been able to re-connect yet.

It is not possible for words to capture the magnitude of what Peter gave to so many of us.

My life was enriched because I was Peter's friend and his student. My life was saved because I was his patient.

Condolences to you Dawn, and the rest of the family.

Tight lines Peter.

We were close child and teenage friends
I feel very blessed to have spent many hours boating, playing, and basically growing up with Pete and the Grimm family. He told me many years ago he wanted to become a doctor and he achieved that dream! I will miss his lovely smile and sparkling blue eyes.

I am in shock. He was not only the best oncologist, he was just such a wonderful person. Humble to the max., intellengent, caring. He made me feel like we were best friends and I suspect he made all of his patients feel the same way. I will sorely miss him. Gone from this earth way too young. I look forward to seeing him again on the other side of the curtain.

Our family was unbelievably lucky to meet Dr. Grimm in the summer of 1985 at the Swedish Tumor Institute. He was my daughter's radiation oncologist. He was hugely instrumental in saving her young life from ovarian cancer. He was gentle, kind, caring and magnificently talented. We will always be grateful to him. I've never forgotten his empathy and now, over thirty years later, he still stands out to me above all the others.

I didn't know Dr. Peter Grimm personally, I took advantage of his research, organization and results of the interventions for prostate cancer. Through his publications I made my decision to have brachytherapy.

After reading his obituary it made me think of a question that I remember in Philosophy Class. It was, "Can one man change the world?" My answer now, without equivocation is, "Yes, one man can change the world."

What an honor to have been treated for prostate cancer by Dr. Peter Grimm almost exactly 14 years ago. I fondly remember him as a kind and caring physician.

What a loss -- for his patients, his family and the entire medical community. "Your cause of sorrow must not be measured by his worth, for then it hath no end" (Macbeth). Rest in peace Dr. Grimm. You were a remarkable human being.

Peter touched many people's lives in a lot of different ways. He was a kind and caring physician, a medical innovator,a teacher. But he was also just a wonderful, happy person who loved his family and friends and he was fun to be around. His happy demeanor was all the more remarkable to me given the myriad of medical problems he was constantly battling. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Peter these past twenty-some years and look back fondly on our time in the OR together implanting radioactive seeds in patients and the seeds of professional respect and personal friendship in our hearts. I will miss him greatly.

Dawn, I am so sorry for you and your family for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Peter made a difference in every facet of his life. Those of us who were fortunate to have crossed his path are better people because of him. Peter left us with the greatest gift. He left us memories of life with a great, and humble man.
God Bless you Peter.

I was Peter's patient in the Fall of1994, when he was at the Seattle Prostate Institute. My wife and had cmd from Alexandria, Virginia for a Second Opinion at the Institute. Based on Peter's review and recommendation, I underwent brachytherapy at home in Alexandria. Peter flew in to assist, observe, and to "Replicate the Program," as I was the first patient to have interstitial brachy in the Washington DC - Baltimore Metropolitan area. I'm still i remission, 21+ years later. Literally, I owe my life to Peter. May God rest his soul.

Peter will be missed. He was a person of consequence and distinction, but more importantly, he was a good friend and colleague. We worked together, in harmony, for more than two decades. We shared ideas, listened to each other but always laughed a lot. He memory will be blessing for all who knew him.

I am a patient of Dr. Grimm, I was just treated last July in Seattle. Dr. Grimm's demeanor and his ability to explain your condition in a very comforting and caring manner was fantastic. He also had a great sense of humor. My wife and I left town after the procedure feeling like I had the best treatment possible, and a Dr. that really cared.

I have been in Brachytherapy sales for 15 years and Peter Grimm was always the most passionate and respected physician in the industry. One thing I will always remember is that he always took the time to say hello and shake my hand at meetings. I will always remember him as a gentleman and someone who was always willing to help.
