Philip Lindsay Obituary

Philip G.

Lindsay, M.D.

1937 ~ 2017

Dr. Phil Lindsay was a modern renaissance man-distinguished physician, loving and romantic husband, committed and engaged father, nature photographer, ornithologist, sculptor and artist, intellectual and athlete. Above all, he was kind, generous and thoughtful. He was perpetually positive and cheerful, even when challenges came his way.

He drank deeply from life.

Phil, Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Psychiatry, was in private practice for over 40 years-always in suit or jacket and bow tie. He was central to the development of a Psychiatric Service at Valley Medical Center and then to the Psych ICU at Providence Hospital. He loved medicine and he loved helping people. To all his patients: thank you, you gave him great purpose. He felt it was an honor to work with you and drew inspiration from your stories.

Phil was a wonderful husband to his wife Susan Burnett Lindsay. Together they shared 44 happy years of adventure and romance. He wrote poetry for her, while she added flowers and candlelight. They created many treasured memories in their home of 38 years, their sailboat the "Peregrine," and their house in Sun Valley. Together they attended many arts events. Favorite activities included skiing, tennis, sailing, entertaining, picnics and travel. Their adventures started with their honeymoon in Greece and took them on many trips around North America, Hawaii and Europe. Most recently, with Brooks, they took an eagerly-anticipated Viking River Cruise on the Rhine.

Their three sons Scott, Blake and Brooks were Phil's pride and joy. For the boys, their father was the athletic trainer, baseball thrower, intellectual challenger, backpacking trail finder, Boy Scout leader (Silver Beaver award), boating instructor and the vocabulary tester. He spent countless hours imparting his passion for photography and exploration--identifying and appreciating every bird, tree and flower along their trail. They loved backpacking to Shi Shi beach and taking cues from nature while making wood sculptures and art in his workshop.

In the last several years he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, Laryngeal cancer, and heart arrhythmia. Through these he was forever positive, never complaining, always with a smile, willing to do anything, adventurous to the end.

He is survived by his loving wife, Susan, his sons Scott (Courtney Gregoire), Blake (Mili Mittal), and Brooks. By 4 granddaughters: Ruby, Audrey, Alexa, and Baby Girl Lindsay on the way. By sister Karen Hoffman, cousins Lynn and Frank Lindsay, and Susan's family, Jim Burnett (Sharon Silverstone and Rachel Burnett) and Jean Olsen. He was preceded in death by his parents Phil and Ruth Vittetoe Lindsay and Baby Chase Lindsay.

Phil saw beauty in everything, flowers, birds, gardens, sunrises, sunsets, water, mountains. He lives on in his three sons, their beautiful children and Susan's heart. He loved life, lived boldly and will be deeply missed.

Celebration of Phil's life: Sunday, October 1, 2017, 3:30 pm at Seattle Tennis Club.

In his memory, donations may be made to The Museum of History and Industry, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Greater Seattle Boy Scouts or The Sun Valley Summer Symphony.

We knew Philip in his early years of marriage (We were at your wedding!) and of his psychiatric practice, and he demonstrated an intelligent pursuit of excellence in professional and family matters. Kudos, Phil! And warm wishes for Sue and the Lindsay family.

In 1970, Dr Lindsay saved my life in the emergency room of Valley Medical Center, when he was doing his residency there. I had complications from lupus and encephalitis in the brain. At that time I should have died, but didn't and I am so very grateful to him for that. He went on to become my personal physician for many years after that. I was extremely saddened to see he passed away. Rest in Peace, Dr Lindsay.
