I first met Phil's wife, Sally, about 1981. She asked me to make a ring for her husband. I remember the design clearly; it was the Mercedes symbol with pave diamonds to be worn as a pinky ring.
She was a complete delight to work with. She was charming, smart, and always understated. Those qualities were a little hard to find in some of Bellevue's elite. But that's who she was.
After I made the ring, Phil Jr. stopped in to say "thank you". I made things for a lot of local folks back then, but he was the only one who came back, who took time out of a busy day to say "Thank you". The man was class from nose to toes.
I'm sad to hear of his passing. We are diminished.

IR, may you rest in peace. My 12 years in Seattle were spent in close proximity to JR and his organization on East Pike Street. My memories of that time are full of fondness and positive energy. What a marvelous time we had. Sally, my heart goes out to you and yours. ---Peter Till---

We knew Phil Smart Jr. through the Northwest Historics, SOVREN Guild for Seattle Children's Hospital.
We remember him coming to the races and always greeting us and spreading kindness.
Our hearts, love and strength go to the family, especially his wife, Sally.
Phil was a wonderful person and left the world a better place.

My heartfelt sympathy with your loss, as I lost Arnold this past September. I have learned it does get easier to accept each day. It is especially hard with the holidays so close. I wish for yours peace in your hearts and beautiful memories to ease this loss. All of Phil's friends, I know, are praying for you and your family. He will be missed by a lot of people. Love you Sal, Always, Betty Gold

My sincere condolences to the Smart Family on the passing of Phil (Bud) Smart. I remember he and I traveled to WSU for Senior Weekend. We stayed in Sigma Chi Fraternity and had a great weekend. We traveled over in his 55 Chev Belair. Bud liked to drive fast then and I was glad there were no cops around - we both would have been in jail. Even though the physical side of life leaves us, the memories last forever.

I have heard the news and want you to know your whole family is in my thoughts and prayers. He was an individual who reached for every single dream and encouraged others to do the same and set your expectations HIGH, don't ever give up, and always "do the right thing". You all will always hold a special place in my heart as over 1/2 my life was spent there at 600 E Pike St and the "family" business and working with/for an incredible family. Please know he is a true "star" among all the stars in heaven right now. I will be seeing you all at the service on Monday.

I heard the news all the way down here in Texas. I will dearly miss JR. A fond memory of mine will be a hike that he, my father, and I took while on the Condit Campout. At that time my wife was pregnant, and it seemed like a good time to share the news. I will never forget his words of wisdom on the prospect of becoming a father and his offer to take the picture of me and my dad on that special day.
