Richard Ballinger Obituary

Richard H. BALLINGER Richard Henry Ballinger of Seattle died Saturday March 26, 2011 after suffering a stroke earlier that week. Born July 27, 1932 in Seattle to Richard Talcott Ballinger and Oneida Stever Ballinger, he was a grandson of the Honorable Richard Achilles Ballinger, Mayor of Seattle 1904-1906, Secretary of the Interior 1909-1911. Dick was raised on Lake Ballinger and graduated from West Seattle High School in 1950. He en tered the University of Washington, but left to join the Air Force in 1951. He was stationed in Alaska and Utah and served until 1955. While in the service, Dick played drums in a jazz band. He re-entered the University of Washing ton in 1955. He spent his summers away from college working a tugboat on Alaska's inside passage. He graduated in 1959 with an engineering degree and began a long career as a structural en gineer. Dick's lifelong passions includ ed boating, fishing, railroad, reading, music, and golf. He loved his family and friends and had a wonderful sense of humor. He spent his last several years happily living with his new friends at the Viewpointe retirement community on Queen Anne Hill. Dick is survived by his two sons, Richard Stever Ballinger and Edward Tucker Ballinger, daugh ters-in-law Laurel and Michelle, granddaughters Jasmine and Neva, grandson Edward, two sisters, Shirley Liebenow and Gail Vaughan, and many nieces and nephews. A private service was held at Lake View Cemetery in Seattle on Friday, April 1, 2011. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that friends make gifts to the University of Washington Civil Engineering Scholarship Fund not ing that they are in memory of Richard H. Ballinger.
