Richard Thompson Obituary

Richard (Dick) Thompson

Richard died peacefully in his sleep on January 5, 2018 in the Memory Care Unit of Queen Anne Manor. He was 83 years old.

Richard grew up on Magnolia, graduated from Queen Anne High School in 1952 and from U.W. Law School in 1958. He set up his practice in Burien, married Rose-Marie and had two children, Sherri and Brian. In 1974 he ran for, and won, a King County District Court Judge position and held the judgeship for 28 years, retiring in 2003.

In 1983 Richard married Doreen, they honeymooned on safari in Africa and together they built their dream home at Three Tree Point. For 35 wonderful years Richard and Doreen have shared their love of travel all over the world. With friends Jane and Paul they enjoyed 33 consecutive years at the Shakespeare Festival in Ashland.

Richard loved the outdoors and together with Brian they hiked miles on the Pacific Crest Trail. Both Sherri and Brian remember a wonderful trip to the Grand Canyon and an unforgettable mule ride to the bottom.

Richard liked reading, visiting art galleries and collecting glassware. He was a kind, soft-spoken and caring father and husband.

He will be greatly missed by his wife Doreen; daughter Sherri (Greg), son Brian and grandsons Aaron and Sojin. He also leaves behind his Tacoma family - sister Nancy, niece Jennifer and nephews David, Scott and their children and grandchildren. His Canadian family will miss him as well, brother-in-law Morley, sisters-in-law Gwen and Marg; nephews Lee, Kenneth, Daniel; nieces Lani, Cheryl and grand-nephews Alex, Michael and Max. We shared many holly, jolly Christmases together.

Losing a loved one is never easy. But our God promises to give the strength and courage youll need to endure, and to cope with the pain of your loss. He also promises to hold your hand every step of the way.

DICK THOMPSON
When I joined the Highline Kiwanis Club in 1969, Dick was a member and the club met for evening dinner meetings. He was a participating member and was elected the clubs 36th President for the 1973-74 year. During that year several significant changes occurred at Highline Kiwanis Camp Schonwald, which resulted in a future increase in the use of the camp.
The club embarked on a project of adding a second story to the camp lodge. This took about two years of Saturday morning work parties to complete. The second change was the camp added a resident caretaker to assist in managing the camp.
In 1980 Dick was elected to serve a Secretary of the Highline Youth Foundation, the formal owners of Camp Schoenwald and he served in that capacity for over 30 years. His service to the club in this position will always be appreciated.
Dick served as President of the Club a second time during the 1999-2000 year a quarter of a century after his first term. I feel privileged that Dick was a part of my Kiwanis life for the past 45 years. May he rest in peace. Jim Jennings
