Sally Brown Obituary

Sally J. Brown

1940 ~ 2016

Sally Jean Brown, who brought sparkle to the lives of many, died December 30, 2016 at her Mercer Island home. She was a member of Mercer Island High School's first graduating class. Sally received a degree in journalism from the University of Washington where she was president of the Associated Women Students and a member of Gamma Phi Beta. She worked for the Mercer Island Reporter for 17 years. Later she owned a specialty food business and managed restaurants in the Pike Place Market and Laurelhurst. She was a founding member of Les Dames d'Escoffier Seattle, professional leaders in the fields of food, beverages and hospitality. She was a trustee of the Women's University Club and president of the People's Memorial Association of Seattle. An editor of "Mercer Island from Haunted Wilderness to Coveted Community,' the island's history book, she was beginning a term as president of the Mercer Island Historical Society. She loved photography, travel and cooking. First in her heart was family: husband Larry Brown, daughter Dr. Carrie York Williams, her husband Mark Williams, son Brice S. York and his wife Megan York; grandchildren Chase York, Braden Williams and Elisabeth Williams; a brother James Ford and a sister Kathy Ford. Contributions may be made to the People's Memorial Association or simply smile at someone you love in memory of Sally.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m Friday January 6 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church,

4400 86th Ave. S.E., Mercer Island.

I was so sorry to hear of Sally's passing. I knew Sally through the WUC. What a joy it was to be around her. She always put a smile on my face. I will keep Sally and her family in my thoughts and prayers.

I am so sorry to hear of Sally's passing. I worked at the Mercer Island Reporter in the 1970s and will always remember her taking me "under her wing" and always showing kindness.

Sally was such a positive life force and enriched our lives when we both lived in Maui. Her smile, vivacious personality, and commitment to family and loved ones will be sorely missed.

To Larry you have lost a partner and buddy that grew and grew into a beautiful flowering plant with deep roots. I am heartfully sorry. She will continue to aid you in the kitchen.

To her son and daughter and your families.
Your mother was a champion of women leading all of us upward and forward. I envied her tenacity and will power.

You have a big legacy to live up to but I know from what she shared about you, so proud she was, that you will endure and carry that out.

Love to all of you.

Sally was TRULY one of the most beautiful "forces of nature" I have ever met. She brought sunlight, joy and incredible laughter into all of our lives. I thank the Universe that we were privileged to take the ride with her!

Offering my heartfelt sympathy on the loss of your beloved wife and mother. May your treasured memories shine through your sorrow. May the God of all comfort who gives hope be with you during your time of grief. (Matthew 5:4,5)
