Sandra McCloud Obituary

Sandra Lee McCloud

Sandra Lee McCloud, Bremerton native, resident of Bellevue and Seattle, died on October 25, 2014, surrounded by her children and their families. Her memorial service will be on Saturday, November 1st, at 2:00 p.m. at

St. Mark's Cathedral in Seattle.

Sandy was born on October 4, 1939, to Donald Arthur McCloud and Doris Grace (Olsen) McCloud. After graduating from Washington State College in 1961, she worked as a junior high school teacher. She married Roy Ballinger, moving to Bellevue where she raised her children while working as a tax preparer and bookkeeper in the legal and investments industries. She later moved to Seattle, eventually living in the Eastlake neighborhood.

Sandy was a vital presence in her church communities, both at Saint Margaret's Episcopal Church in Bellevue, and at Saint Mark's Cathedral in Seattle. She devoted many hours of service building homes with Habitat for Humanity in the United States and Mexico, including several hurricane relief projects in New Orleans and Florida.

Sandy's world travels began during Roy's Navy service, taking her to several East Asian ports of call. Highlights of her later travels included the Soviet Union, the Holy Land, Mexico, and China.

Back at home, Sandy doted on her beloved pets, was an enthusiastic member of her quilting circle, an ardent Mariners baseball fan, and the instigator of annual camping trips with her grandchildren.

Sandy is survived by her brother Steve McCloud and his wife, Diane; her children and their spouses Mark Ballinger and Marie Sauter, Leslie and Jeff Adams, and Kristin Ballinger and Jason Gelfand. Sandra took great joy in her five grandchildren, Quinton Adams, William Ballinger, Louisa Ballinger, Ellie Adams, and Hope Gelfand.

In honor of Sandy's years of service with Habitat for Humanity, donations in her name will be used in a special build. Checks can be sent to St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, 1245 Tenth Avenue East, Seattle, WA 98102, with "in memory of Sandy McCloud" in the memo section.

Sandy was also devoted to Camp Huston, and donations there can be made "in memory of Sandy McCloud", sent to: Camp Huston, P.O. Box 140, Gold Bar, WA 98251.

Sandy and my dad Paul, walked to school together in second grade. She and my mom, Sandra, became school friends and were young married women with children. Sandys life has been intertwined in my family for decades. She was one of the threads woven in my fabric. As a quilter she understood this on a creative level. She wanted the quilt to be beautiful and useful when it was done. But the fun was in choosing a vision, selecting fabric and other tools, designing, sewing and sharing it with someone else. And having extravagant fun along the way. We will miss your cute smile and warm heart, sandy. Kelley Sutherland, Arroyo Grande, CA.

Sandy was a wonderful partner in our high school chemistry class as well as a good friend. Her smile was infectious and she will be missed by all.

Sandy and I were young teachers together at Lynnwood Jr. High and remained friends for many years. During the last couple of years we somehow lost touch, but I will always remember her bubbly personality, her sense of humor, and her deep faith and caring. She was also an outstanding teacher. She will be missed.
