Agustin Cruz Garcia
08/28/1945 - 07/23/2025
Agustin Garcia Cruz, born August 28th, 1945 in El Valle de Guadalupe, Jalisco, Mexico to Leocadia Cruz and Gerardo Garcia. The third of seven children, he loved his family selflessly and supported some of them in migrating to the United States.
Agustin married Esther Oropeza (1950-2016) on July 25th, 1967; Together the pair emigrated from Mexico to San Francisco in 1972, and through sheer grit and love, found their footing in the Excelsior District where they raised their four children, Leticia (1968), Gerardo (1970), Estella (1973), and Jose Agustin (1974).
Agustin's sense of household and family wasn't confined to his address-together Agustin and Esther made emigration to the United States possible for many more members of their family and opened their home to many more as stewards of their faith. As faith leaders in the Church of The Epiphany, Agustin and Esther nurtured lifelong friendships through Encuentro Matrimonial, their dinner table always welcoming with the greatest warmth, not just in food, but an unjudgmental ear and empathetic words that encouraged many men and women to stride confidently where they once stumbled. Agustin would, without fail, encourage thousands to stride in confidence, as a key organizer for La Cruzada Guadalupana he shepherded thousands annually well over ten miles from South San Francisco to the great stone atriums of Saint Mary Cathedral to honor The Virgin de Guadalupe and their indigenous Mexican heritage in the recounting Juan Diego's fateful encounter.
Agustin's fundamental character is his incredible sense of duty and selfless work ethic- a trait that provided for his family and was recognized by his friend, Ken Pence, who turned his business over to support Agustin in creating A.G. Quality Plumbing. Over the past 35 years there isn't a district in San Francisco that hasn't benefitted from his plumbing, and construction skills. Taking on complex jobs, often by himself, in commercial buildings from laundromats, storefronts, offices and apartments-Agustin is a man most often unsung: A man who kept the lights on and the water running for hundreds of people who never knew him as anything but a plumber.
A man of little words should you ask him about himself, rather, you'd know Agustin by his deeds; you'd know him in the pride he tried to hide – the little boy he always was grinning – when presenting what his hands could create, be it a new faucet or a garden he and Esther would tend. You would know Agustin in what he taught his children, grandchildren and great-grandson: self-determination will always be rewarded in this life.
Agustin reunited with Esther on July 23rd, 2025, at the age of 79, just in time for what would be their 56th anniversary. His Sunday tradition of bringing Esther two bouquets of carnations continues, albeit with a much more pleasant commute.
Agustin is survived by his four children: Leticia, Gerardo, Estella, Jose Agustin; granddaughters, Vanessia and Nala; grandsons: Christian, Daniel, Ellias, Israel; great-grandson, Adam; brothers: Juan Jr., Jose, Pedro, Daniel; and sisters, Socorro and Maria Guadalupe.
