Al Atkinson Obituary

Al Atkinson (1954-2012) Al is survived by his wife, Michele (Fogo), three wonderful children, twins Rick and Alan Jr., daughter, Colette, and sister, Lynn. Al was the son of Harry and Connie (Anderson) Atkinson and loving younger brother of Dick, Joan, and Harry Atkinson, all peacefully deceased. He loved his nieces, Karen Atkinson and Jennifer Torres, and nephew, Cliff Atkinson, and was a devoted friend to Kathy Atkinson. Al passed February 28th of cancer in Scottsdale, Arizona. Al was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School, where his love of sports led him to excellence in baseball, football, and golf. He lived in the Virgin Islands for many years, opening the Barbary Coast and East Coast Bar and Grill, before his family moved to Scottsdale in 1998. He loved his many friends and colleagues in the restaurant and spirits industries, and as a SF native he was a loyal Giants fan to the end. Al was surrounded by his wife, children, and family when he passed peacefully. Full of optimism, passion, and humor...a bright light that has dimmed too soon. I was a lucky guy to know Aldo. I worked and played with "The Hawk" in St. Thomas in the 1980s. Conch Parmesan, Bombers, "Shot-a-Clock", it all seems like a dream now. A wonderful foggy dream that included my friend Aldo. Rest in peace my friend, rest in peace.

I met Al when I was about 13 and through the years, both in high school at Sacred Heart and beyond we had a lot of great times and I still have many found memories. He was my friend and my teammate, but most importantly he was a great guy and a good man. Although in recent years we didn't communicate much, I will always have fond memories of the crazy, and always fun things we did over the years. I extend my condolences to his family and friends and I'm sure all of his classmates from Sacred Heart '72 do too.

Lynn,
We were lucky to have a couple of good hours with Al two weeks ago, before we realized how ill he really was. He still had his quick wit and ready smile.
I'll always remember him as the eternal optimist, quick with a laugh, enthusiastic and hard working. Our business ventures in the Virgin Islands wouldn't have gone well without his 'can do' attitude, work ethic and generous soul. He treated everyone with respect, humor and affection, regardless of your social status.
Michele was a pillar of strength in their marriage and was solid to the very end. I'm anxious to relate to his kids what a huge figure he was in San Francisco and to give them the opportunity to meet some of his many friends here
We'll all miss him and this is a great lesson to stay in touch with those you love.

Al was a bright spot in our lives when we were all in the VI. Al & Michelle's friendship was one of our most fond memories of St. Thomas. The Barbary Coast, The Coasters, birthday parties on Magens Bay are memories we will cherish forever.
