ALAN ROTHSTEIN Obituary

Alan Roel Rothstein Jul. 28, 1941 - May 28, 2012 In Daly City, peacefully passed away at home in the arms of his loving family on Memorial Day at age 70. Alan was born in Manhattan, New York. He grew up in the Bronx and made his move west when he went to UCLA, where he studied Political Science and served as Editor-In-Chief of the Daily Bruin. His undying love of the Giants brought him to San Francisco after graduation where he worked at Social Security Administration. It was there he met his future wife. Frances and Alan were married in Las Vegas in 1979. Alan went to Loyola University and later, University of San Francisco to get his Juris Doctorate. He went on to own a Family Law practice in Daly City, which he ran for 4 decades. Alan earned many awards in his work in Family Law, including honors for his pro-bono work and his volunteer work in domestic violence prevention education. Alan was a die-hard sports fan. A true UCLA Bruin his whole life, Alan was a member of The Bay Area Bruins, which recently created a scholarship in his name. Alan was the longest serving regional president in the history of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, where he gave so much of his time, energy and passion. He also served on the international board of the organization. Acceptance of diversified sexual orientation in the movement was extremely important to Alan and he worked hard to help achieve the acceptance he felt everyone so deserved. He was very involved in a program United Synagogue had for mediators for congregations and he used his background as an attorney and mediator to establish some of the mediation practices used today. Alan was extremely committed to his synagogue, Congregation Beth Sholom. He served as First Vice-President, President and Counselor of the synagogue from 1994-2000. He also served on Beth Sholom's Executive Committee for 8 years. When asked about their time together working for the synagogue, Past-President Maureen Samson said, "It was a huge amount of work, but we really liked what we did. Alan was very highly respected and it was very obvious he really cared about this place." Alan is survived by Frances, his wife of 33 years, his former wife, Linda Braudy, sons Scott Rothstein and Neal Rothstein and his wife Stephanie, and his daughter Rachel Lotspeich and her husband Stuart. Alan was blessed to know and love his two grandchildren by Neal and Stephanie, Silver and Isadora. He is also survived by his brother David Rothstein and his wife Ellen, his loving nieces Stephanie and Svia and his grandnieces Elisabeth and Stella. Alan is predeceased by his parents, Seymour and Edith Rothstein and his great friend and mentor, Bernard Reiner. Graveside services will be held Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 11:30 a.m. at Home of Peace Cemetery, 1299 El Camino Real, Colma, CA 94014. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Congr. Beth Sholom, 301 14th Ave., SF, 94118.

It was with deep sorrow that I learned of Alan's passing. I knew Alan for what seems like forever because he was there for me when I started mediating with Family Court Services over 30 years ago. Alan was a true gentleman who always shared news of his family with great pride. He was truly a very dear man and I feel lucky to have shared this world with him for so many years. Rest in peace, Alan.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Alan's family. I am very sad about Alan's passing. I had the pleasure of meeting him and getting to know him through my job at Family Court. He always had a twinkle in his eye and would often talk about his family, proudly and lovingly. I will remember him as a very sensitive and kind person, with a strong work ethic, and a great sense of humor. He was a real mensch and I will miss him.
