Albert Ottoboni Obituary

Albert Ottoboni
05/15/1926 - 11/17/2024
Albert Ottoboni died in the comfort of his home in San Francisco, on November 17th at the age of 98. Every seed that Al Ottoboni planted, flourished throughout his life. Even after his death, the life he built continues to flower: from the Golden Gate Park Nursery he tended and his backyard garden to his 77-year marriage to June and his close family. The people, plants and animals whose lives Al touched will forever be impacted by his strength, resilience, and love.
Al was born to Eva and Bartolomeo Ottoboni on May 15, 1926. He attended Balboa High School and then proudly served in the Navy and found his passion as the Chief Nursery Specialist at San Francisco Recreation & Parks in Golden Gate Park where he was in charge of coordinating the planting of flowers for Golden Gate Park and other San Francisco Parks for 34 years. He was the dutiful owner of 8 German shepherds throughout his lifetime. As an outdoorsman his whole life, he loved nature and often enjoyed time in South Lake Tahoe.
Beyond his passions and at the forefront of his purpose was Al's family. In his 98 years, he was the loving husband of June Della Ottoboni for 77 of them. He was also the beloved brother to the late "Oghi" Agostino Ottoboni, with whom he loved to hunt and fish. He passed on these traditions as a devoted father to Mark & Gary Ottoboni; caring father-in-law to Diane & Linda; adoring Nonno to Lucas (Katie), Christopher, Michelle (Steven), and Briana; proud and tender great-grandfather to Eva (1.5), daughter of Michelle and Steven Hutchinson; an anticipated Bisnonno to Lucas & Katie's first daughter arriving in December; and dear Uncle to Darlene & Bob Merlo.
Towards the end of his life, he was supported by an incredible group of caretakers: Maria, Lourdes, Arlene, Gemma, Argentina, and nurse Regina with the Angel Palliative Care and Hospice in his final days.
In the time of his death, Albert leaves a legacy of love and strength that will continue long after he is gone.
A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, November 26 at 10am at Italian Cemetery, 540 F Street, Colma immediately followed by a Committal.

Dear Gary, Linda, and the entire Ottobani family:
Please accept our sincerest condolences on the loss of your wonderful dad, grandfather, and husband. He was a wonderful man, and I always enjoyed seeing him and your Mom at the Monte Cristo Club. I would always refer to him as Mr. Ottoboni and he would always say to please call him Al, which I was never able to do! He was loved by many, and will be greatly missed. What a wonderful legacy he has left behind. He will always be in your hearts.
With our sympathy, Gary, Cheryl and Janelle Barrango

For decades, Al and my Dad were close friends in R&P...Al was a great guy!

As teenagers in the late 60's, Mark and I worked side-by-side in a part time Summer program, in the nursery...a lot of fun.

No matter how busy Al was, he always had time for you. And if it was a horticultural question, rested assured, you got the right answer.

In the early 70's Mark & I joined the R&P family, with Mark following in his Dad's foot steps, into the Nursery. In 1983, I moved to a home in San Ramon,
I asked Al, "what tree should I plant in my yard that would make a statement?"
Al handed me a 6' Sequoia Redwood and said, "give it room, and watch it grow". Still in the same house, 41 yrs. later, that 6' Redwood is now a 60', a gorgeous, beautiful tree. When someone comments on the tree, Al gets brought into the conversation...I have a living memorial of him right in my own yard.

June, Mark, Gary...so sorry!
It was a pleasure knowing Al!

In Loving Memory of Albert Ottoboni

It is with a heavy heart that I write this tribute to Mr. Albert Ottoboni, a man who made a lasting impact on my life. As one of his caregivers, I had the privilege of spending time with him and witnessing his strong personality, his determination, and his unwavering love for the people around him. While he had high standards and was a man of great discipline, beneath that strength was a heart full of love, respect, and kindness.

Albert treated me like family, and it wasn´t just him-the entire Ottoboni family welcomed me with open arms. Being in their home never felt like work. It felt like being surrounded by love, respect, and genuine care. They always made me feel important and appreciated, and for that, I am truly grateful.

Albert taught me valuable lessons through his actions-his strength, his resilience, and his ability to show care in his own unique way. He didn´t always need to say much; his actions spoke volumes about the kind of person he was. He showed me how to be firm yet compassionate, and how to stand strong for those you love.

I want to thank him and the entire Ottoboni family for coming into my life and leaving such a meaningful mark. Albert´s presence, love, and lessons will always remain with me. I am deeply grateful to have been a part of his journey.

Rest in peace, Mr. Ottoboni. You will always have a special place in my heart.
