Alexander Maasry Obituary

Alexander Nimr Maasry

April 22, 1981 - July 18, 2017

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our son, brother and uncle Alexander Nimr Maasry (April 22, 1981 - July 18, 2017) after a fifteen-month battle against brain cancer. Alex was born in Washington, D.C., where he attended St. Albans school. At the University of Pennsylvania he co-captained the soccer team to an Ivy League championship and graduated magna cum laude in 2004. He also received a joint MBA and Masters in Public Policy from Stanford Business School in 2011. Alex spent most of his professional life with McKinsey and Company, primarily in San Francisco, with previous experience in London, Brussels, Shanghai, and New York. His professional legacy will be honored by a foundation set up in his name to promote civic engagement and leadership geared towards positive social change. A funeral service will be held at the National Cathedral on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at 10 am in Washington, D.C., and a memorial celebration in San Francisco on August 9, 2017. Alex was an energetic and brilliant colleague. I learned so much working with him in the White House. He made such an impression on me in the short time we worked together. My condolences to his family and please know that he made an impact on people across the world.

Observing Alex's heart, determination, and skills on the soccer pitch (unfortunately, he was usually on the opposing team), and his extraordinary camaraderie, we could already see that he was a special person with a brilliant future. We are deeply sorry for this loss to the world, and we send our sincere sympathy to the family and his many friends, colleagues, and admirers.

I did not know Alex, but heard so much about him, I felt the need to make a comment. Spending much time with the Pasternaks, they spoke often, and highly of Alex. His love of life, is strength in trying times, his drive, his love for their daughter. I am sorry for your loss. but know that your loved one has left a positive in this world, and many are richer for having known him.
