Amelia Schmidt Obituary

Amelia Victoria Schmidt April 15, 1913 -August 7, 2008 Amelia passed away peacefully in Grass Valley, CA, on August 7 at the age of 95, with her loving niece at her side. Amelia was born in San Francisco to Amelia (Schwab) and Victor E. Schmidt and was the third of four children. She graduated from Girls' High School in 1931. Her early years were marked by the death of her father in the Spanish Flu Epidemic, and the Great Depression and WWII. Most of her working life was spent as a government employee for the US Army at the Presidio and Fort Mason. Amelia (Min) had an intelligent and inquisitive mind, a sense of humor, and had a broad knowledge of many subjects. A lover of books, poetry, photography, art and collecting were among her lifelong interests. She had a generous and compassionate nature, and contributed to many charities and organizations and was a volunteer at The Little Sisters of the Poor and at St. Mary's in SF. Countless injured and homeless cats found a safe haven with her. After living in her beloved San Francisco for 87 years, she moved to Grass Valley to be assisted by her niece during her long battle with Alzheimers. She was predeceased by her brothers, Victor and Joseph; and is survived by her sister, Louise Villarreal of Grass Valley; her nieces: Louise Barsten of Nevada City and Dona Marriott of Los Altos; her nieces' children: Greg Barsten, Julie Barsten Pascualy, Joy Marriott and Megan Marriott; and four great-grandnieces. Committal Services will be at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery. I have passed the mountain peak and my soul is soaring in the firmament of complete and unbounded freedom; I am in comfort I am in peace. - Kahlil Gibran
