Angela Cortez Obituary

Angela Cortez

October 25, 1927 - February 6, 2019

Angela passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on February 6, 2019 at the age of 91. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Cortez, her parents, Fernando and Josefa Banuelos and siblings Lazaro, Brigida, Florentino and Consuelo.
Angela met Gilbert in Oakland, Ca. where they both were born and raised. They met during their high school years. They married in 1948 and ultimately moved to San Leandro where they had their house built and raised their three children.
Angela worked for the San Lorenzo Unified School District for 25 years as an Instructional Aide then as a Commissioner after retiring. She was also a volunteer for the Alameda County Sheriff's Office for 23 years. While working at the school district and through her volunteer work, Angela made many friends and touched many lives.
Angela was very social and enjoyed many activities with her husband Gilbert which included traveling, attending sporting events and musicals, dancing, and entertaining friends and family at their home.
Angela enjoyed reading, following the A's, Raiders and Warriors, attending musicals, attending church and related events, going out to lunch and dinner with friends and family, taking day bus trips to local casinos, and spending time with friends. She treasured the many friends she made through the years and enjoyed socializing with them. She was very good at nurturing her friendships. She always made an extra effort to remember birthdays, holidays and special occasions by sending thoughtful cards.
Angela was a loving mom who was very supportive and involved in her children's lives as they were growing up. Angela was a Blue Bird and Campfire Girl leader, Den mother and active in various school related organizations and activities. Through the years Angela enjoyed attending her children's sporting events, and other various special events in their lives. She also loved being a grandmother and enjoyed spending time with her granddaughter Alyssa. She was very proud of her family and always had a camera close at hand to capture special moments at family parties and events. She created many photo albums filled with memories of family and friends through the years. She will be missed by many.
Angela is survived by her children, Sandra (Joyce), Richard, Linda, (Michelle), granddaughter Alyssa Cortez, brother Fernando Banuelos, brothers-in-law Armando and Manuel (Pauline) Cortez, sister-in-law Mary Helen Banuelos, and many nieces and nephews.
A private burial will be held with family members at Saint Mary's Cemetery in Oakland, CA. The family requested any donations be made in her name to the Alameda County Deputy Sheriff's Activities League 16378 East 14th Street #204, San Leandro, CA 94578. Tax ID# 83-0410537.

Peggy and I knew Angie since our high school days at McClymonds in Oakland. Angie and Peggy both worked on the yearbook Afterglow staff. Many years later, in retirement, we met up with Angie and Gil, attending dances together at the Mr. and Mrs. Club at Southland Mall and the Five Spot Club in Castro Valley. We invited Angie and Gil to go with us to the Oakland Downtown Senior Center dances. There they used the old-fashioned dance cards, which was a list of dances in order, so you knew what was coming up. Angie and I from then on called each other Number 6, because we always danced #6 the waltz, together. Angie and Gil were wonderful people and friends of ours. I am so glad we got to know them and call them our friends for so long. I will miss them both very much.
Fondly, Norman

May the memories of the wonderful times you shared together bring a smile and joy in your heart.
