Ann Kroeber Obituary

Ann Kroeber
09/13/1946 - 07/13/2024
Ann Kroeber was born in St. Louis, MO, the daughter of Marie and Adolf Kroeber. Ann grew up a military brat, something she surprisingly enjoyed. All the moving taught her an invaluable skill that stuck with her all her life: how to work a room. During the 60's and early 70's Ann worked at the Peace Corp in DC and later at the UN in New York where she also received a B.A from Columbia University. At the UN Ann found an unlikely calling, she fell in love with the evocative power of sound. Ann traveled to San Francisco in the late 70's on a whim, to pursue a career in film. Soon after she would meet her late husband and film collaborator Alan Splet, and would remain in the Bay Area for over 40 years. Ann was not only a pioneer for women in sound, but for the industry as a whole: Ann's unconventional recording methods, discerning ear, and the soul and humor she brought to everything she did will live on in legacy and with her extensive body of work. Ann moved to Tucson for retirement in 2018 where her health, both cognitive and physical mobility, took a turn. On July 13, 2024 Ann Kroeber left this spinning rock, leaving behind a massive impression and a million wild stories. Blessings blessings dear Ann, rest in passion and beauty. Ann is survived by daughter Lisa Splet, son Christopher Splet, grandson Max and brother Jeffrey. A memorial celebration will be held in San Rafael on September 13th. I was delighted to meet Ann and interview her for our recent book on creativity in film sound. She was so generous and warm and honest with her advice and wisdom. An incredible woman, humble and immensely talented.

Long story short, I am a professional admirer, and struck up a correspondence with her almost 20 years ago and we had a small but sincere aquiantan-friendship. When we finally met (shortly before she left the bay area) she took me out to dinner at her brother's restaurant. She was just so gracious and full of stories. She deserved greater recognition in her lifetime (and, frankly speaking, a lot more cash) for all she gave to the world through her work. I will miss her greatly.

Sad to hear of Ann's passing, she was our guest at a symposium on sound in film on Gotland in 2018 and she was such an inspiration. My condolences to the family.

I'm so sad to hear of Ann's passing. She was my first friend in the Fantasy building. And we remained friends until she left for Tucson. Ann taught m a lot about sound recording and was an inspiration. We shared laughter and good times.

Ann was a wonderful film and colleague of mine at the Fantasy Film Center in Berkeley for many years. A pioneer in sound recording and more, Ann will be missed.
