Arthur Massey Obituary

Arthur Lair Massey Dec. 17, 1929 - Nov. 18,2010 Art Massey passed away with his devoted wife and best friend of 29 years, Cheryl, by his side. He leaves behind a loved daughter, Arta Broun (Larry), two lively and charming grandchildren, Cayla and Max, as well as dear family members and friends on the West Coast and in Texas. Art came to the Bay Area from Texas in 1956 and had an active business life for over 50 years. More important, he was a mentor to many, leading by example with his clarity of thought, respect and humor. He was a lifelong believer in fairness and equality for all people which he demonstrated consistently in his daily life. A passionate bicyclist for over 40 years, he explored many trails from the Los Gatos hills to the Sierras to Lake Tahoe. To Art's many cycling buddies, especially the Outfitter's group in Los Altos, please climb your highest hills, look around and think of Art. He was a truly manly man. Thanks to all the kind spirits at Mission Hospice. Donations to Glide Memorial Church, 330 Ellis St., San Francisco, CA 94102

Art was the friend that everyone should have, funny, gentle, soft spoken and a great rider specially on the way to Lick Observatory at Mt Hamilton, He took me up there for the first time...I will miss him dearly.

Art was always with us on the Wed and Thurs rides from the Outfitter. What a pleasure to talk to him whether on Altamont, Moody, Foothill Park, or back down at Peets. When Art spoke he spoke with all the joy of biking and listened to everyone. An honor to have been his friend.

I met and regularly rode with Art as a member of a Los Altos Saturday morning cycling group, 1992-94. I was the neophyte... Art was one of the "pros". I too will remember Art as a strong rider, never missing the weeekly ride, and a truly nice person. It was my pleasure knowing you, Art.

My memories of Art are of a strong rider and a gentle and kind man. Soft spoken but worthy of listening to carefully. He sure didn't show his age while on the bike nor did he avoid even the toughest climb. But, above all he was a true gentleman and a good friend. I'll surely miss you, Art.
