Audrey Catherine Hewitt Burkard, 77, died peacefully in her sleep at her home in Atherton on Monday, December 23, 2013.
Born October 24, 1936, in Dublin, Ireland, Audrey came to the United States at the age of 20 and worked at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where she met her husband, Herbert Gee Burkard. The couple moved to the Bay Area in 1972, settling in their home in Atherton shortly thereafter.
Married 53 years, Audrey and Herb raised two children, Lise and Bruce. Audrey was an active volunteer for the children's schools and later for organizations such as The Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) at Stanford University and Filoli. Audrey had a passion for antiques and was a well-loved antiques dealer for more than 35 years on the Peninsula. She is survived by her husband, children, their spouses Michael and Agapi, and her four grandchildren: Nichol, Lukas, Dane, and West.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m on Thursday, January 2, at St. Bede's Episcopal Church, 2650 Sand Hill Road, Menlo Park. Friends and relatives are welcome at the service and the reception immediately following at St. Bede's.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Audrey's name to The Bachmann-Strauss Dystonia & Parkinsons Foundation (http://www.dystonia-parkinsons.org).

Aunty Audrey was a beloved sister to my late father John. Audrey and the family visited us many times in England and I remember the great times we had. Audrey was a warm and loving aunt who will remain in our hearts forever.

Dear Lise,
So sorry for your loss. Your mother was such a wonderful person. She was so sweet and helpful to me and always offered good advice. I especially needed that back when I was new to California and my own parents were in another state. She will be missed.
Hugs to your dad and Bruce, too.
