Barbara Cortese Obituary
September 9, 1945 - March 14, 2023
We are sad to announce the death of Barbara (Marzigliano) Cortese who passed away peacefully on March 14, 2023. Barbara was predeceased by her beloved husband Francesco (Frank) Cortese and their son Nicolas. She is missed dearly by her children Rose and Carl Bright, Vincent Cortese, Frank and Vanessa Cortese, and will always hold a place in the hearts of her grandchildren Carlo, Antonio, Liliana and Franco. She will be remembered fondly by her extended family and her many friends.
Barbara had a long and active life working at the University of California, volunteering at St. Jerome Catholic Church and at Kaiser Richmond Medical Center, and also serving as a Local Board Member for the Selective Service System.
There will be a viewing Wednesday, March 22, 1-5 pm at Sunset View Cemetery in El Cerrito with a Rosary beginning at 3:30 pm. The funeral will be March 23, 10 am at St Jerome Catholic Church in El Cerrito. Friends and family are welcome to attend. We invite you to make a donation to Meals on Wheels in her honor in place of sending flowers.

Barbara was a kind and generous member of the parish of St. Jerome's, El Cerrito, where she volunteered her knowledge and shared her faith with countless people seeking to deepen their faith or return to its practice in the Church. She will be sorely missed. She was a dear friend to many. This message is written on behalf of the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts.

I first knew Barbara ("Ziggy") during our years at Hunter College High School from 7th to 12th grade. She was exuberant and very funny. Later, I learned of her wonderful work teaching her grandchildren and working at her church. It was fun to see her on Hunter '63 "mini-reunions" on Zoom during Covid. I know her family will always remember her for the wonderful woman she was.

I remember from our earliest seventh grade days at Hunter, Ziggy's brightness, her smile, and her kindness. How many adolescents are kind? She was, and I'm sure that she was a light in the lives of her family. My condolences for your loss.
