Bella Chiu Obituary

Bella Ma Chiu Passed away peacefully on April 22, 2009, at her home in San Francisco. She was forever kind and compassionate to her family and friends, who will miss her dearly. Bella was born in Sydney, Australia, on November 26, 1915, and moved to Hong Kong as a child. There, for decades, she and her late husband, Dr. P. P. Chiu, were major supporters of art and music organizations, graciously hosting many local and international musicians. San Francisco became Bella's adopted home in the mid-1990s where she continued her generous support of various musical organizations. She is survived by her brother Jimmy (Maude); her daughters Yeeha and Yee-Wan (John); her sons Sin-Chong (Maxine), Yanek (Mary), and Sin-Tung; her granddaughters Lynette and Tanya; her grandsons Mark (Fiona) and Jason; and her great granddaughter Kiana; as well as many nieces and nephews. A private family service was conducted last weekend. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Bella and P. P. Chiu Memorial Scholarship Fund, Community Music Center, 544 Capp Street, San Francisco, CA 94110.

Dear Sin-Tung and family,
My deepest and sincerest sympathy to you. Sin-Tung, you have always been a gracious and caring man, teacher and son. I fondly remember your care and concern as I cared for my mother during her very long illnesses. We have our memories, and their love. That will never leave us. Best wishes, always, Sara Johnson (and Sara and Daniel)(and the Community Music Center families)

To the Chiu family, losing Bella is more than a loss to all her loved ones, but a loss to my own link to childhood in Hong Kong. I'll always remember her genuine interest in others and her encouragement for others to achieve her or his full potentials. A truly remarkable woman of her times. She'll remain my inspiration forever.
