Benjamin Maeck Obituary

Benjamin Harris Maeck, Jr., M.D. Benjamin Harris Maeck, Jr. M.D. was born in Shelburne, Vermont, January 6, 1927, the son of Benjamin Harris and Hannah Edgerton Tracy Maeck. He died peacefully in his San Francisco home with his family on January 22, 2007. Dr. Maeck was a graduate of Northwood School, Lake Placid, Dartmouth College and the University of Vermont College of Medicine. He interned in surgery at St. Luke's Hospital, New York, and completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at New York Orthopaedic Hospital, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, New York, followed by a fellowship at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, London. He served as a medical corpsman in the United States Navy during WWII. In 1960, Dr. Maeck began his orthopaedic surgery practice at Franklin Hospital, now Davies Medical Center. He is remembered as a caring and dedicated physician, for his warm, ready smile and his quick Vermont wit. Dr. Maeck was a happy dry fly fisherman whether at the cabin at the headwaters of the Fall River or on the chalk streams of England. He was a life member of the Flyfishers' Club, London. His family will long remember their annual August hike in the High Sierra and their time together at Vogelsang High Camp; time for fishing, philosophy, literature and poetry. Dr. Maeck was a son of the American Revolution. Dr. Maeck is survived by his wife of 46-years, Charlotte; his children John Van Sicklen II, Elizabeth Hylton, Benjamin Harris III, M.D., William Durkee; his son-in-law, Greg C. Hylton and his Hylton grandchildren, Hannah Maeck, D. William II and Elizabeth Dupont Hylton. Dr. Maeck admired and respected his brother John and was happy to help establish a chair in his name. Donations in Dr. Benjamin Maeck's memory may be sent to the Fund for the Chair, John Van Sicklen Maeck, M.D., Professor and Chair-man Obstetrics and Gynecology, c/o The Dean's office, College of Medicine, University of Vermont, Burlington, VT 05495. The family service will be held at the Shelburne Town Cemetery, Shelburne, VT.
