Beverly Ann Mangus

Beverly Ann Mangus, a woman whose love for her family knew no bounds, passed away peacefully on October 9th, 2024, at 87. She was born on August 28th, 1937, as Beverly Ann Salem in Huntington, West Virginia. Beverly's devotion to her family, especially her daughter and grandchildren, was a guiding light in her life. Her friends will miss her subtle southern accent and sense of humor, but her greatest gift was her ability to love. Beverly is survived by her daughter, Jan Marie Ray, her son-in-law, Gregory Ray, her grandson, Andrew Ray, and her granddaughter, Julianne Ray. She is also fondly remembered by her siblings: Constance Hamilton, Shareen Salem, Frederick Salem, and Christine Gillam. Additionally, she will be forever remembered by her nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and a host of extended family and friends.
Beverly attended St. Joseph Catholic Elementary and St. Joseph Catholic High School in Huntington. Beverly was a nurse, but she was more than a nurse. In the 80s, she was the head of Ward 93, the Methadone Maintenance Unit at San Francisco General Hospital. From there, she received her Master's degree from USF and went on to be the Nurse Manager of the Asian Focus Inpatient Unit. Her final position was as night Supervisor on the Psychiatric Unit of San Francisco General Hospital. On weekends she supervised all of San Francisco General Hospital. She was proud to have graduated from Georgetown University and interviewed prospective students for many years. Beverly was selected to be part of "Ship of Hope," the world's first peacetime hospital ship providing healthcare and trained healthcare workers worldwide. She did not accept the position, due to her strong family ties and needs here at home.
Beverly's warm, loving, and adventurous nature won her several achievements and inspired those around her. As captain of the high school cheerleading team, she led the team to the state championship twice and received the American Legion Award. Beverly graduated from Georgetown University with the School of Nursing Alumni Association Award for scholastic achievements. These accomplishments and dedication as a leader set her on a trajectory to achieve a number of awards and notoriety throughout her life.
Beverly's love for the opera and literature, and her dedication to the arts, showcased her intellectual depth. She was a season ticket holder for the opera, demonstrating her appreciation for the arts. She was also an avid reader and a member of a book club with friends since 1989, displaying her love for literature and intellectual discussions. After retiring, she continued to serve her community by volunteering at the California Academy of Sciences, the De Young, and the Legion of Honor. Beverly was recognized for volunteer service for the Ostrich Program at the California Academy of Sciences.
Beverly's Catholic faith has been a central part of her life since childhood. She was a long-standing member of the St. Brendan Catholic Church. Her helpful, generous, and compassionate nature and dedication to her faith led her to volunteer for various clubs, events, and roles associated with the Church and school. Beverly served as Eucharistic Minister and Lector at St. Brendan and as President of the St. Brendan Women's Guild, receiving honors and recognition for her work.
Beverly was a longtime resident of the San Francisco Miraloma Park area. She enjoyed daily conversations with her neighbors and taking long walks along the Mount Davidson path near her home. Beverly's adventurous spirit inspired her to travel the world. Her first taste of the travel bug was when Beverly and her sister Constance drove cross country from Huntington, WV, to San Francisco, CA. She loved Venice, Italy and the yearly family trips to Hawaii which instilled in her family a love of travel. Beverly loved the beach and nature, inspired by her childhood spending time with siblings and friends at Dreamland, the family's public pool in Kenova, West Virginia.
A funeral service celebrating Beverly's life will be held at St. Brendan Catholic Church, 29 Rockaway Ave, San Francisco, CA, on November 4th, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. Followed by Reception to be held at the St. Brendan Parish Hall. You're welcome to join the family for burial at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery right after the reception.
