Cameron Dorsey Obituary

Cameron Dorsey August 12, 1926 to May 4, 2007 Our beloved Cambo left us gracefully on Friday morning, May 4th. He was at home in Sausalito. A world-class curmudgeon with a huge heart and a wicked sense of humor, Cameron gave his fortunate friends a very special quality of affection and support. And he made us laugh. Always. Born in Chicago. Attended University of Illinois, Urbana, until financial exigencies forced him to quit. Became the youngest salesman ever for the Kimball Piano Company, a colorful period of his life that he remembered fondly. Head of Midwest Regional Sales for the Revlon Company during the halcyon days of Charlie Revson (another colorful time), followed by a stint at Faberge. Came west to explore the Bay Area in the mid-50s, met his first wife Barbara on his second night in San Francisco, married her in 1955. Together, they bought and managed several apartment buildings in Berkeley while Cameron took advantage of the intellectual life at U.C. and finished his degree. Although their marriage dissolved in 1963, Barbara and Cameron remained fast friends. Moved to Sausalito, a town that stole his heart. Practiced real estate brokerage for some years in Marin County. Met his second wife, Anne Breckenridge, in 1975, in Santa Barbara (another town he loved). Their 27 years together were as good as it gets. Served as a planning commissioner for Sausalito for eight years, during which time he helped legitimize the Galillee Harbor houseboat community, a reflection of his commitment to preserving the old character of the Sausalito waterfront. Board member of the Richardson Bay Maritime Association. Chair of the Arques Maritime Preservation Foundation, established to ensure the survival of the Arques School of Traditional Boatbuilding on one of the last pieces of undeveloped waterfront property in Sausalito. An ardent supporter of the Sausalito Library. Voracious reader; news and political junkie (of the liberal persuasion). Loved the 49ers and a good game of poker. He is survived by his wife, Annie; his daughter Elizabeth Bush of Pebble Beach; his granddaughter Alicia Bush; and a host of cousins who adored him. Friends and family will be notified about a celebration in his honor. He would be grateful for donations to the Sausalito Library in his name.
