Charlotte Ritchie Obituary

Charlotte Suzanne Ritchie
01/09/1955 - 09/13/2024
Our beloved Charlotte passed away peacefully at home in Larkspur after a long and arduous illness, aged 69, with her life partner, Paul; and dog, Georgia, at her side. Char's kindness, compassion, generosity and wit were intact until the end. Who among us won't remember her glorious laugh even through the darkest of times?
She was born at Franklin Hospital (now Davies) in San Francisco and grew up in the city, attending Madison School then Convent of the Sacred Heart, where she was renowned for her pranks, including unscrewing the microphones from telephones and watching the nuns shout helplessly into the receivers.
The first of many transformative events happened when she enrolled at Sorbonne University in Paris and discovered her inner Parisienne. She learned perfect French, was as chic as any native, and made lifelong friends in the City of Lights. She graduated from the American College in Paris and eventually returned to San Francisco. Then at age 25, she took a trip to New York and fell madly in love with Manhattan. She ended up staying seven years, working in various jobs including apartment leasing, where she called herself "deals on heels." There, too, she made a wide circle of friends, even though she was proud of the fact that she rarely went west of 5th Ave., or south of 57th St.
When she returned to San Francisco, another transformative event occurred when Char became chronically ill. For years, she fought through it, then took up the cause of phone counseling for others with chronic conditions. She discovered a gift for compassionate healthcare, which propelled her into the graduate nursing program at USF. She graduated magna cum laude, eventually becoming a hospice nurse and leaving an indelible legacy among all her patients. She kept a thick binder of handwritten thank you notes from the families who she had helped in their most difficult moment and there were dozens. It was one of her proudest possessions.
Her other proudest possessions were her golden retrievers and she had a string of rescue dogs who were almost as beautiful as she was. They were like children to her, and Char's mother always referred to Sandy, Meagan, Chloe, Lexy, and Georgia as her "gran-doggers."
One thing Char hated was the fog, so in her 30s she moved to Marin and never looked back across the bay. There she met Paul Bruin, whose dry wit and love of goldens matched hers. They were together for 25 years.
Char is survived by her life partner, Paul Bruin; stepdaughter, Chloe Bruin; brother, Mark Ritchie (Renee Le Baron); sister, Tori Ritchie (Sam Whiting); nieces, Harriet and Bennett Ritchie; numerous cousins; and endless friends, from the Angels to her fellow hospice nurses to her AA community to those from New York and France and beyond.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Char asked that donations go to the Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County: ccscc.org/donate

Char's larger-than-life laugh, her sparkling, dry wit, her uncontested beauty and endlessly fascinating circle of friends made life so worth living in 1970s San Francisco! Thank you for bringing us out of our shells, Char. You will be missed by many, I am sure.

My heart goes out to Paul and Georgia during such a hard time.
I met Char About 13 years ago and we became fast friends. We were sisters and we had an amazing bond. I so cherished our friendship.Char Was the most kind, genuine, loving and compassionate person. She cared so deeply for others and she so loved animals and her beloved Georgia. She was smart, insightful, and always had the best advice whether personal or medical. We had wonderful weekly, sometimes more visits. There was always lots of laughter. She would laugh so easily, and that alone would crack me up. In spite of her illness and on rough days, she could be upbeat and funny. She was stoic and brave, didn´t dwell on her health or fall into self pity. She handled her illness with such grace. We need more Charlotte's in this world.
There´s a missing piece in my life now. I miss her so much and always will. She´s so enriched my life and always will. She. is irreplaceable. In a quandary, I sometimes think what would Char say.
She´s at peace now with her loving God and the angels

I was blessed with Char's friendship for over thirty years. We spoke and saw each other often. She was my go to for non judgemental advice and wisdom with laughs in between. I miss her tremendously. I hope she is happy and free as can be and accompanied by her beloved goldens.

Her wonderful laugh imprinted in the memories of others. Pranks bringing tears from laughter. "Oh my stomach hurts from laughing." The very best ones. The compassion, warmth, and love. AA made families who daily fought to stay sober. Who encouraged those who earned chips. Cheered those who earned a cake. Pranked many over the years. An impish pixie who delighted in making other laugh and smile. Rest Well ~ See you on the other side. Love sent

To know Char was to love her. We went through the upper grades of Convent together and had more fun than ought to be legal. Her pranks were hilarious. Charlotte was smart and funny, and grew into a person much admired by all of us Convent girls. She was resilient, brave, compassionate, and graceful in the face of a debilitating illness. Her accomplishments were many.

I will miss Charlotte deeply. I´m glad that she is at peace.

Char and I became College friends at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, now Middlebury MIIS Campus, we loved speaking and kidding in french and coming to the city on weekends to dance and visit friends. Reconnected with her in Marin and had meaningful connections. She was an important person in my life and touched many throughout her life. Beautiful, fun and kind to friends and of service to many.

Charlotte...our friendship was short, a couple of years and I came to adore you quickly. Such a great sense of humor, compassion and kindness beyond measure, Our love of Asian Art, animals, and just giggling a lot was so much fun.
Sharing our faith was especially wonderful.
You are my spiritual sister and my life was blessed because you were in it.
May you be singing with the angels and I hope there are many Golden Retriever´s to play with.

What an extraordinary, fulfilling life. I hadn't seen Charlotte since our 1969 graduation from CSH elementary school. I was fortunate to talk with her by phone twice since 2012 and tried to keep in touch with cards and emails. I loved it when she told me about her dogs. Her bravery and strength was inspirational while facing her health problems. I often look at this photo from June 1969. You can see Charlotte is laughing, having a fun time. My prayers are with her family.
