Daniel Uesugi Obituary

Daniel Teruo Uesugi

June 30, 1934 - June 7, 2014

Daniel Teruo Uesugi passed away peacefully on June 7, 2014. Daniel was surrounded by his loving wife Gerry, his children, and loved ones.
Daniel was born and raised in Hawaii, and in 1956 brought his young bride to California. He started his career as an architect with McCue Boone Tomsick in Berkeley, then had a ten year hiatus traveling extensively around the world with Y. Higa Enterprises, a family transportation/moving company. Dan then returned to architecture, his first passion, eventually opening his own firm, Uesugi & Associates in San Francisco, specializing in movie theatres, retail, medical and financial institutions, where he worked until his untimely passing. His design work extended throughout California, Hawaii, Washington, Arizona, Montana, Virginia, and Hong Kong. Dan was a talented baseball pitcher in high school and college and his legacy continues through his four grandsons. He was very active in community work as president of the Contra Costa JACL and coached Golden Gate Optimist baseball. Dan loved golfing and made many friends through his membership at the Mira Vista Country Club. He was a long time resident of El Cerrito.
Daniel is survived by his loving wife Gerry of 58 years, his children: Erin (Doug Clough), Steve, and Chris (Kenny Lauer); his grandchildren: Ryan, Sophia, Daniel, Robert, Mia, Jack; sister Ellen (Walter Jinbo), brother Stanley (Allison Uesugi).
There will be a memorial service at Sunset View Cemetery at 101 Colusa Avenue, El Cerrito on Friday, June 20th, at 10:30 am.

Hello Gerry. I'm not sure if you will see this, but maybe you remember me as the one you took me when I was really homesick when I first came to go to Cal. It was because of your kindness that I graduated there, and went to Davis for my doctorate. Please get in touch with me at [email protected]. I'd sure like to touch base with you.

Gerry, I am so sorry to hear of the sudden passing of Dan. What a loss to your family for such a talented, fun guy--and especially for you, his longtime soul mate. Our prayers and thoughts are with you. Love, Diana and Yen Jew

I noticed in the San Francisco Chronicle that your father had passed away and want you all to know that you have our sympathy and condolences at this time. I was a counselor at El Cerrito High and although my section of the alphabet did not include the “U's” I did know of you probably through your friends.

When I came to ECHS in 1974 from De Anza I was unaware of the sizable group of Americans of Japanese ancestry living in El Cerrito, but as time went by many of these kids became close friends...the Koides, the Hondas, the Endos, the Haratani's and the Takedas among others. While I enjoyed almost all of my counselees, I think there will always be a special place in my memory for young people from families like yours.
