David Hooper Obituary

David Hooper, MD

5/21/1956 to 3/6/2013

Resident of Fremont

After a prolonged illness of over 5 years, David Eldon Hooper, MD passed away on 3/6/2013.

Throughout David's illness he was patient with his condition, almost always enduring his suffering with grace, resigned to living whatever length and quality of life was his lot, trusting God, not afraid of death. He never stopped looking out for the comfort and well-being of others, right up through his final lucid moments with us on Tuesday evening. We who were fortunate enough to be close to him are among the multitude of people whose lives were enriched by his friendship and his life's work.

David was one of 5 physicians who started the Palo Alto Medical Foundation Fremont Clinic as an Internist in 1987. He had a formative influence on the culture of the PAMF and he served in several leadership positions over the years, including medical director of the Fremont Center, executive board member of the Palo Alto Medical Clinic and vice president of operations for PAMF. He played a critical role in the merger of Palo Alto Medical Clinic, Camino Medical Group and Santa Cruz Medical Clinic to form PAFMG. David was elected to the new PAFMG board but was never well enough to serve. More recently he worked with Mills-Peninsula, where he shared his considerable expertise in developing a strong multispecialty group practice culture.

David was an early advocate for improving the care experience for patients and the care team at PAMF", stated Dr. Tony Marzoni, PAMF Executive Vice President, and President, PAMF Palo Alto Division. "He asked more questions than he answered, and he taught our emerging leaders through his embodiment of our values. And David was a firm believer in the servant leader.

David is survived by his wife Lynda and children Chase and Gabrielle. Chase is a Junior at Oregon State University at Corvallis Oregon studying pre-medicine courses. Gabrielle Hooper is a freshman at Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff Arizona, studying pre-nursing. They are both continuing the tradition of healing and helping others. The family would like to thank the many family members and friends who have expressed their love and respect for David during this difficult time. Finally David is at peace and we can celebrate his life and legacy together.

David's motto for living his life was all about "Making the World a Better Place". Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at his church on Sabbath, March 23, 2013 at 3:00p.m at Sunnyvale Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 653 W. Fremont Ave, Sunnyvale (408) 732-4080. A Fellowship Reception will be held immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers please consider giving to the "Sunnyvale SDA Church". David was passionate about teaching Bible study and this fund would provide resources for Bibles and Bible study Books. A donation can be sent to this fund at the address above. And for more than 20 years, David was a physician leader at Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF) and he poured his heart and soul into making "the care experience" better for patients and the care team. To honor the contributions of his life and work at PAMF, the organization created the "David Hooper Memorial Fund" at PAMF to support scholarship and continue his vision of improving "the care experience". The address for this fund is PAMF, Department of Planthropy, 795 El Camino Real, Palo Alto, CA 94301.

Dr. David Hooper was inspiring and compassionate. As I was one of the lowest on the totem pole at PAMF in 1998, he reached out to me and had me trained to excel in areas I never would have dreamed to have had an opportunity. As a single mother, he guided me through the ranks and at the same time allowed me to have compassion for others along the way. He shined with light of Jesus. He always strived for a healing experience for others. May he rest in peace. Thoughts and prayers for his family, Neesha Rodriguez

David will always have a special place in my heart! He was so smart, so kind, so funny and so brave! I am so sorry he is gone, but glad he is in peace. Heaven will be a wonderful place! I can't wait to see him there! Penny Kimball-Jones

I went to college with David over thirty years ago. I remember him as a happy and friendly young man -- eager to learn, pursue a career, and enjoy life. He always stood out as a caring person who wanted a challenge and went after the best in everything he did. I feel blessed to have known such a talented and caring person and feel a great loss knowing that he has left us. God bless.
