Dora Kim Obituary

KIM, Dora Yum - Passed away on October 7, 2005. Dora was born in Manteca, CA on March 16, 1921 and moved to San Francisco the same year. Dora's husband of 63 years, Tom H., preceded her in death on July 20, 2005. She is survived by, and will be greatly missed by her loving children: Tommy Jr., Darlyne (AI Rickard), Kyle and Kerry; her grandchildren: Michael, Eric, Marc and Kerry Jr.; her great-grandchildren: Shina, T.J., Taylor and Alex; and many loving friends and relatives. Dora was a pioneer and leader in the Korean Community. In 1976 she and her son, Tom, founded the Korean Community Service Center in San Francisco and paved the way for a multitude of Korean immigrants to obtain U.S. Citizenship, housing, training and employment in the San Francisco Bay Area. Dora was one of the first Asian women to pass the California Real Estate License Exam. She was vice president of the Business & Professional Women's Club in 1979 and was an elected delegate to the White House Conference on Aging in 1981. Dora was a founding member and president of The United Nationalities, the first multicultural organization in SF. In 1987 Dora received the Woman Warrior Award from the Pacific Asian Women's Bay Area Coalition. She also received her Adult Teaching Credentials and taught English to Korean immigrants. In 1989, she received the South Korean President's Medal of Honor. In 1995, Dora received recognition from the City and County of San Francisco for her public service work with immigrants and was designated a "Living Treasure" by the California Assembly Legislature, for lifetime achievements in the Asian American Community. She was a 1997 graduate of the CORO Foundation Public Affairs Training Program for Women. Friends and family are cordially invited to attend services celebrating her life and achievements at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, October 15, 2005, at the Tiffany Chapel of Cypress Lawn Funeral Home, 1370 El Camino Real, Colma, CA 94014. Entombment will be at Cypress Lawn Memorial Park.
