Doris McMullen Obituary

Doris Evelyn McMullen
03/08/1945 - 01/28/2025
Doris McMullen was the kind and gracious heart of her family. Her true inspiration came from the joy of motherhood, raising three children, and sharing in the lives of her five grandchildren, who referred to her as "Mema". She was a constant source of love, wisdom, and warmth.
Doris passed away from pancreatic cancer, diagnosed in 2023. She leaves a legacy of abundant energy and spirit which she shared generously with family, friends, and co-workers. With her husband of 57 years, Craig McMullen, she traveled the world, visiting over 75 countries.
She was born in The Bronx, to German-Jewish immigrants, Klaus and Martha Meyer, who both escaped the Nazi regime before settling in New York City. The Meyer family moved to Bloomington, Illinois in 1953, where Doris spent her childhood until going off to Western Illinois University.
It was at WIU that she met Craig, and they were married in 1967. They lived in Virginia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, and Illinois. Their final home was in Moraga, California where they lived for over 40 years.
She loved being around children and was an elementary teacher for many years. After retiring from her position in the Oakland Unified School District, she remained busy being a part of her grandchildren's lives. Doris lived a full and active life. She enjoyed her bridge and Mahjong groups and was a passionate walker. She was also a regular volunteer for Angel Network through Temple Isaiah in Lafayette, CA, and was a frequent volunteer with Loaves and Fishes.
Survived by her husband Craig, her daughter René (Michael) Tolajian, Todd (Nancy) McMullen, and Adrienne (Dan) Dibley, and grandchildren Lela, Vivian, Connor, Delaney, and Myla. She is also survived by her brother Roger Meyer and sister Nancy Meyer.
Donations may be made in her honor to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
