Edgar Stone Obituary

Edgar Norman Stone

November 28, 1920 - May 29, 2018

A lifelong and true San Franciscan, Edgar Stone passed away May 29 in San Francisco at age 97.

After graduating from Galileo High School, Edgar attended Stanford University. He graduated in 1941 shortly before enlisting in the Navy to serve in the Pacific aboard the destroyer, USS Fanning, during World War II. Returning to San Francisco after the war, Edgar pursued a career as the owner of men's clothing stores, but he reinvented himself at age 50 when he became a successful stockbroker.

Edgar was the chair and a longtime board member of the San Francisco Zoological Society and also served on the board of the Jewish Home for the Aged. He was a lifelong member of Temple Emanu-El and the Concordia Club and was also a longtime member of Lake Merced Golf Club.

While Edgar was a faithful fan of the 49ers and Giants, he was an even bigger fan of chocolate. One of his greatest joys was entertaining clients and friends with amusing stories, but nothing mattered more to him than his family. He was a devoted husband to the late Beatrice Stone, to whom he was married for nearly 50 years, and father to Marcia Sowers (late Philip Sowers), Ellen Davis (late Laurence Davis), and Patty Stone (Chuck Ortenberg). He was a beloved grandfather to Robbie Sowers, Amy Sowers (Bennie Rodriquez), Cindy Ruhl (David Ruhl), David Ortenberg, and Richard Ortenberg and great grandfather to Emily and Kylie Sowers and to Jacob, Amanda, and Rebecca Ruhl. Donations in Edgar's memory may be sent to the San Francisco Zoo or a charity of your choice.

You were the most caring, extraordinary man. I akways missed your stories and walks at Presidio. You were the perfect gentleman and boss. May you be resting in peace.

I join my mother, Lucille, in remembering Edgar and his vivid personality. There are so many stories that I dont know where to begin. My eternal thanks to Eggs for arranging my 12th birthday party at the San Francisco Zoo at night. A very special lifelong memory! Love always, Joan

I am so terribly sorry to learn about Eggs passing away. He was a wonderful friend to Jim and me over many years. Jim and Eggs shared a sense of humor and a profound love of chocolate over a lifetime. Thinking of your family with much love, Lucille Abrahamson

Edgar was a dear friend and great companion to Mom. She loved his ability to talk about any subject, his dry wit and his unflinching defense of animals.

And so ends a sixty year friendship
undimmed by distance. A fine gentleman who leaves a splendid legacy. A sad loss...at any age.
