Edwin Jacobs Obituary

Edwin M. Jacobs, M.D. Sept. 8, 1925 - Oct. 17, 2009 Clinical Professor of Medicine at The University of California, San Francisco, died peacefully at his home on Saturday. A fourth generation Californian, born in San Francisco, Dr. Jacobs attended Presidio Open Air grammar school and Montezuma High School. At age 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, 86th Division Blackhawks. He served combat duty first in Europe and then the Philippines. Upon return, he received a bachelor's degree from Portland's Reed College and medical degree from New York's Cornell Medical School, with training in the new fields of oncology and chemotherapy. His ten years' medical training were exciting, learning from some of the country's finest senior physicians. He was appointed head of Clinical Research at UCSF's Cancer Institute. For 15 years, he devoted his considerable expertise and compassion to his patients; they adored and respected him. Dr. Jacobs was a pioneering oncologist in Northern California in the use of chemotherapies. One of his very first patients, riddled with cancer, is still alive at age 70 due to Dr. Jacobs' innovative treatments. Dr. Jacobs went on to the National Institute of Health in Washington D.C. for a decade, allocating grant money for the country's regional cancer centers. Coming home in 1985, he continued donating his time and skills to professional groups such as UCSF's Protocol Review Committee. He received many honors for his service and dedication. Besides his love for medicine, a passion for music dominated his life. Attending concerts as a young boy, beautiful performances never ceased to enthrall him. With friend Dick Wahlberg, he shared many wonderful afternoons listening to and discussing musical performances. His knowledge of the repertoire was vast. A patron of the performing arts, he is a member of the Pierre Monteux Society. Dr. Jacobs is survived by his beloved wife, Shari; stepsons David, Walter and Robert; adored grandchildren Loren and Aaron; his brother Bob (Nina) Jacobs; many cousins and devoted friends. A Memorial service will be held Thursday, October 22nd, 1:00 pm in Hills of Eternity's chapel at 1301 El Camino Real in Colma. In lieu of flowers, donations to the S.F. Symphony's Pierre Monteux Society would be appreciated.
