Edwin Wortham IV, MD

10/13/1917 - 1/2/2016

Edwin Wortham IV died in Pleasanton, California on January 2, 2016 at age 98. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Kloss Wortham; daughter Courtney Wortham Clements; sons, Edwin V (Cynthia) and John Richard (Lynette); Grandchildren: James W. Clements III, Mark Wortham Clements, Mary Georgene Clements, Caroline Dawn Wortham (preceded in death on 9/5/2015), Edwin Wortham VI and Ian Richard Wortham; former son-in-law James W. Clements II, former daughter-in-law Tamara Gill and many Wortham nieces and nephews.
The son of Edwin Wortham III and Marion Randolph Hawkins, Edwin was born in Richmond, Virginia. He had a younger brother, Charles Frederick Wortham (preceded in death on 1/8/2007). He attended Thomas Jefferson High School, Richmond College (now called The University of Richmond) where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He graduated from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York in March 1943. After serving an internship at the Medical College of Virginia, he was called to active duty in January 1944, serving in the United States Navy as a medical doctor. He was part of the D-Day Normandy Invasion force and treated the wounded while ferrying them from Normandy to England. He then attended U.S. Navy Flight Surgeon's School in Pensacola, Florida. While there, he treated many pilots and soldiers with eye injuries. That experience became the impetus to make ophthalmology his specialty. Edwin completed a two year residency at Medical College of Virginia, and was awarded the prestigious Heed Fellowship in 1948. He began medical practice in San Francisco, California. He subsequently began a forty year private practice in San Leandro, retiring in 1990. He authored several ophthalmology articles in the American Journal of Ophthalmology. He was one of the founders of Laurel Grove Hospital in Castro Valley, California. He was on staff at Memorial Hospital and Doctor's Hospital in San Leandro and Eden Hospital in Castro Valley.

He was married to Georgene Dawn Wise in 1951 until her death in 1986. Edwin married Dorothy Kloss in 1990 "inheriting" Dorothy's six children: Michael J. McGlynn, Jr. (Nafisa), Brian G. McGlynn (Lynn), Kathleen A. McGlynn (Ann), Patricia A. McGlynn Ketner (Darrell), Ann M. McGlynn (deceased 5/25/2012) and Jeanne M. McGlynn Wurzel (Paul) and six grandchildren: Sean M. Ketner, Danielle N. Ketner, Alysse M. Ketner, Arianna McGlynn, Chloe A. McGlynn and Samuel H. Wurzel.

He enjoyed swimming, music, gardening, woodworking, wine, travel, playing bridge, and farming. He resided in Castro Valley for 60 years. He and Dorothy moved to Stoneridge Creek, Pleasanton, California in September 2013.

Ed and Dorothy were great friends. He was a dependable lunch friend for many years and his gentle temperament, inquisitive mind
and love of food and travel made him an ideal companion. He will
be missed. Kudos to wonderful Dorothy who took such good care of him.
