Eleanor Lillian Cameron
01/22/1927 - 08/31/2024
Eleanor Lillian Cameron passed away on August 31, 2024 in San Mateo County. She was born on January 22, 1927 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, to Garnet and Lillian Dewar.
She earned her Bachelor's Degree in Home Economics from the University of Manitoba in 1948, and married F.H. "Bill" Cameron in Winnipeg on December 26, 1950. They started their life together in Montreal prior to moving to Toronto, working in Social Services. Eleanor and Bill relocated to the Bay Area in 1953. Eleanor worked at Capwell's Department Store until she and Bill welcomed their first daughter, Lynne, in 1956. After moving to San Mateo in 1959, the birth of daughter Stacey completed their family in 1960.
Eleanor worked for Macy's Hillsdale for over 20 years! During that time, she volunteered at St. Bartholomew's Church and School, and with her daughters' various activities and Girl Scout troops. She also worked for the Social Security Administration, retiring as a Claims Representative in 1990.
She was the daycare provider for her granddaughters, Sarah and Chelsea, later volunteering in their classrooms. Some of her happiest times were spent attending the girls' many ice skating and theater performances.
Serving as a volunteer docent at Año Nuevo State Park was a very rewarding experience for Eleanor. She took family and friends on after-hours tours to view her beloved elephant seals.
Eleanor and Bill visited England and Scotland in 1984. After Bill passed in 1995, Eleanor indulged her love of travel, going on excursions to Yorkshire in England, camping on a beach in Baja to pet whales in the Sea of Cortez, to Churchill, Manitoba to view Polar Bears, to China and Tibet, to Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, the Amazon, and to Russia.
She was an incredible cook and an amazing baker, who passed her love of baking to the next two generations. Eleanor was active in AARP, Widows and Widowers, Doers and Goers, Lunch Bunch, Circle of Concern, and her Book Club.
Eleanor was predeceased by her parents, Garnet and Lillian Dewar, her husband Bill Cameron, her brother Harry Dewar, and her sister Patricia "Trish" Bracegirdle. She is survived by her daughter Lynne Cameron, daughter Stacey Glynn, granddaughter Sarah (Steve) Arena, granddaughter Chelsea (Mike) Zissman, great-grandson Cameron Arena, and longtime family friend Rene Macay.
