ELLEN THERESA MULKEEN
April 28,1950-July 18, 2021
Ellen was a lifelong resident of the Outer Sunset District in San Francisco. She was the loving daughter of William P. Mulkeen (deceased) and Hazel L. (Carlson) Mulkeen(deceased). She is survived by her two older brothers Thomas M. Mulkeen and Patrick W. Mulkeen, and her nephew Martin K. Mulkeen. Ellen attended Holy Name Grammar School and graduated from Mercy High School(SF-1968)
Ellen was an ardent member of the Hippie countercultural phenomenon occurring in the S.F. Bay Area during the 1960s and 70s and spent a lot of time in the Haight-Ashbury District pursuing art projects and writing musical lyrics.
Unfortunately, it was not discovered until a few years later that Ellen was a victim of schizoaffective disorder which greatly impacted the rest of her life. Her parents and family worked tirelessly to shelter and protect her from the grave outcomes of such a disease and eventually Ellen took permanent residence in the family home where she survived with the professional oversight of the SF Sunset Mental Health Center.
In March of 2021 Ellen was diagnosed with late stage pancreatic cancer and elected to receive palliative care.
Ellen was a very sweet and kind person who struggled valiantly with her condition. She endured countless episodes of dysfunction throughout her life, but never lost her dignity and grace.
We her family can only hope that she has finally found the peace that she sought throughout her troubled life.
May she rest in that peace with her devoted parents who did so much to protect her.
The burial will be private at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma, CA.

To The Mulkeen Family ~
I was so sad to hear that Ellen has passed away.
I have such fond memories of our fun times together at Holy Name Grammar School.
Sadly, we drifted apart going to different high schools and lost tract for many years.
Ellen was so blessed to have such a loving and supportive family.
I know she is now at peace.....

Ellen was one of my students at Mercy. I remember her sweetness and love of poetry. She was blessed in the love of her family . My condolences to them and to all who supported Ellen in her struggles. Now she is at peace.

There are no words to lighten Ellen's loss. It saddens me to hear of her passing. I will always remember her sunny personality and quizzical smile that would light up a room. She left a lasting impression. Rest in peace Ellen.

I am so sorry to hear about Ellen. Her and I went to the same grammar school. Around 20 years ago my daughter and I were on a streetcar visiting SF when a woman came up to me and called me by my name. She told me she recognized me by my eyes. I then realized it was Ellen and was in awe as it had been probably 40 years since I saw her last. My daughter and I remarked how unusual that encounter was and how special that she could remember someone just by their eyes. My prayers and condolences to her family.
