After a long struggle following surgery for a brain tumor, Erik de Lambert passed away on June 29, 2013, in Santa Barbara, California.
Erik was born in Charlottenberg, Sweden, and immigrated to the U.S. in 1949 with his parents, Astrid and Sven, and three siblings, Ben, Sonja and Christina. They settled in Santa Barbara, California, where Erik attended Santa Barbara High School. Erik left school at the age of 16 and travelled across the U.S. and back. He then joined the Marine Corps and served in the Korean War as a cartographer. It was during the war that he became a U.S. citizen, a requirement of the classified nature of his work.
In 1956 he married Pat Bowden. They had two children, Deborah de Lambert and Diana de Lambert White. After he and Pat divorced, Erik moved to San Francisco, where he met Forrest Litchfield, who he married in 1967.
Erik was a man of many talents and interests, as evidenced by the many jobs he had in his life. Among other things, he worked as a meat salesman, a Santa Barbara police officer, doing lighting at the Condor nightclub, maître d' at the Nob Hill Dining Room at the Mark Hopkins hotel, and a commercial photographer. He found his true calling, however, when he took over a city owned golf course near McLaren Park in San Francisco. Renaming it Gleneagles, after the famous Scottish course, and completely redesigning the course, Erik created a first rate nine-hole golf course, that became renowned as one of the best public courses in the Bay Area.
Erik's love of golf eventually drew him to buy a house in Prestwick, Scotland, where he lived part-time for many years. He spent those years playing all the best courses in Scotland and enjoying the pub life, where a drink and a good story were always on hand. Being a bit restless, Erik relocated to Sweden, where he lived for a few years, before returning to the Bay Area, only to move to Mexico and then, finally, to Grover Beach, CA.
Erik is survived by his sisters, Sonja, Christina, Elizabeth, and Katarina, his wife Forrest, his daughters, Deborah and Diana, his five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial golf tournament is planned at Gleneagles golf course in San Francisco, the proceeds of which will go to the American Cancer Society. The family requests that donations be made to the Cancer Society in lieu of flowers. Erik's ashes will be interred in the family grave in Arvika, Sweden, in a private ceremony.

I always enjoyed hearing his stories when I saw him at Gleneagles. He did a great job with the golf course. He will be missed but he will never be forgotten by the regulars at Gleneagles. RIP, Erik.

Returning to SF today since 27 years ago when Erik and Forrest brought myself and my brother to come out the San Francisco to spend a summer with them. My dad Danny was Eriks caddy and driver for the time he spent in Prestwick? Was just looking him up tonight and picked up this terrible news. Our condolences go to his family. the Connor's - Prestwick, Scotland

Erik, my dear brother, it is so hard to believe I will never hear your wonderful stories and tall tales again. I will always treasure those last few days together, and only wish you had been well enough to enjoy them as much as I did. Remember what I told you, "No matter where in the world we are, you are always in my heart. Always have been, always will be". Your baby sister, Saga Christina.

I had the great pleasure to work with Erik for the past two years. He was a fascinating man and I enjoyed the time spent with him. My condolences to his family and friends. I always remember his strict but kind way of teaching me to cook to his liking. What a guy! The best gift ever was to learn to embrace someone and dance...even without any music playing. Thank you Erik.

I spent many a day at "The Eagle" playing all day, listening to Erik's stories and sipping on the finest single malts in the Bay Area. He was a character; sometimes you loved him, sometimes not. A unique man.

I remember countless stories with Erik at Gleneagles where he was as willing to drink a scotch or tell a story as he was to take my money on the putting green. One of the favorite I will remember is the day he was turning over the course and called me in to his office where he handed me the classic old brass cash register that he of course told me a story about and he said he knew I would appreciate and to this day still adorns the front room of my house and entertains many a child with its echoing classic "ding". Erik will be remembered by me every time I hear that sound just as he is every time I enter the hallowed clubhouse at Gleneagles - a place where if he had not kept it alive I would not still be in my favorite city San Francisco. My deepest condolences to all those who loved him. DK

I have many fond memories of playing Gleneagles and returning to the most unique public course clubhouse I have ever encountered. I never golfed with Erik but remember the after round times in the clubhouse fondly. Rest in Peace.

A golfer through and through, his imprieuter on a lonely and neglected acreage in the southwest corner San Francisco is a classic: Gleneagles International Golf Course. Thank you for that "Old Peculiar".
