Frances Lum Obituary

Frances M. Lum In San Francisco, June 21, 2006. Beloved daughter of the late Philip P. and Jessie Y. Lum of Honolulu. Frances was born in San Francisco on May 21, 1928, and raised in Oakland. She graduated from Holy Names High School (1946); from the then San Francisco College for Women, Lone Mountain (1950); and from the University of California School of Library. Frances then embarked on a 42-year journey around the world as a librarian for the U.S. Armed Forces, starting first in what was then called French Morocco. She also served in France, Germany, Puerto Rico, Greenland, Illinois, Texas, the Philippines, Thailand, Japan, Okinawa, all the major U.S. military academies, and finally, England. She was especially fond of the British Isles, and made it a point to visit there annually, after her retirement. For her devotion to her work, Frances received a presidential citation signed by President Bill Clinton upon her retirement from federal service. After retirement, Frances volunteered many hours at St. Mary's Paulist Center Bookstore, and at George Peabody Elementary School's library. Frances is survived by her brother, Philip A. (Betty) Lum; her sister, Victoria A. (Ben) Chuck; and her brother, John B. (Lorraine) Lum. In addition, she leaves nephews, Timothy (Karima) Lum, Mark Lum, Terence Chuck, Gregory Chuck, John E. (Lilian) Lum, and David (Nicole) Lum. Another nephew, Michael Chuck, predeceased Frances. Viewing will be on Sunday, June 25, 2006, 2 - 4 p.m., at McAvoy O'Hara Co., Evergreen Mortuary, Geary Blvd. and 10th Ave. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 27, 2006, 10:30 a.m., at Star of the Sea Church, Geary Blvd. and 8th Ave. Interment will be at Mt.
