Frederick Leitz Obituary

Frederick William Leitz

May 3, 1931 – April 30, 2016

Frederick William Leitz passed away peacefully in his Alameda home on Saturday, April 30, 2016.

Fred Leitz served his country from 1948 to 1952 in the US Navy and was a proud veteran of the Korean War, serving on the USS Bausell. After his time in the military, he continued to dedicate himself to public service as a police officer for the Oakland Police Department. It was a job he took great pride in and was a highlight of his life. On the force, he was promoted to sergeant and gained expertise in traffic accident investigation, forgery, and fraud, retiring from the department in 1968. His experience allowed him to pursue a role as a private investigator and, later, he became the Director of Security for the Community of Harbor Bay Isle from 1980 – 1989.

Fred was known by his family and friends as an avid golfer. He loved to be outdoors and was a gifted athlete. He was the owner and manager of the Alameda Golf Course Coffee Shop for several years, adding bar service to the business. He continued to devote his time to public service by serving on the City of Alameda Golf Commission for two terms from 1993-2001.

Fred Leitz was a devoted family man who provided a good, loving home for his wife and children, an avid reader, an active citizen who was engaged in Alameda city politics, and a major history buff – an expert on anything to do with World War II. He was also a dyed in the wool Oakland A's fan, and followed them with great enthusiasm.

Fred will truly be missed, and is survived by his loving wife Jo Leitz, his sister Carol Thornton, his children and their spouses, Bill and Maureen Leitz; Marijo and John Cuellar; Steven and Virginia Leitz; and Michael Leitz and John Flores, as well as his many grandchildren and great grandchildren including Erica and Derek Bystrom and their children Taylor, Blake and Rhett; Buddy Leitz, Jennifer and Tyler Birkey and their son Brock, Kelly and Chris Rue and the children Hannah and Cooper; Scott and Heather Cuellar and their daughter Isla; Steven and Jamie Leitz, Penny Leitz, and Sarina Leitz.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at 11:30am at St. Joseph Basilica in Alameda followed by a reception at the Grandview Pavilion, 300 Island Drive, Alameda, CA 94502.

My condolences to the Leitz family. I've known his son Bill since the third grade, and Fred coached our St. Joseph Grammar School eighth grade baseball team. I was the team's no-hit/good fielder first baseman and I remember one game getting spiked in the leg by an opposing player scrambling back to first on a pick-off play. Fred went nuts. He later took me to an urgent care office for stitching. I really appreciated his caring support that day.
